UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Having read all of the posts above, I am kinda confused by the word limits for the first two essay supplements! Are they both limited to 1 page in length?

For this prompt: Share with us a few of your favorite books, poems, authors, films, plays, pieces of music, musicians, performers, paintings, artists, blogs, magazines, or newspapers. Feel free to touch on one, some, or all of the categories listed, or add a category of your own. (250 words approx.)

Can we list our favorites or is it recommended to add some lines of WHY we like each one?

Hey guys !! You could watch the ViewChicago videos (on YouTube on the most recent ones on the UChicago Admissions Google+ page) for the answers … but basically (on the most recent one) the person said that there is really no word limit, but they do not really want the favorites one to pass half a page and the WhyChicago one to pass a page in length.

Hey UChicago, why hasn’t The University of Chicago released a class profile of 2017? I see the profile of 2016 on the official website yet I am not sure if the testing middle 50% has changed this year.

Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to email the 2012 Tax Returns and W-2 Forms via email? If so, do you know the email I can send the PDF files to?

Thanks for your help!

My question is very specific for 2013, but:

Is the EA deadline 11/1 or 11/8? I know that the deadline was extended to 11/8 for those experiencing technical difficulties, but does that apply to everyone?

@Debater1996 Yep, it’s for everyone according to the UChicago twitter page :)

Hi Grace!

The UChicago supplement for the prompts (mantis, history, etc.) asks us to upload a one to two page document. Should the essay be single or double spaced?

Thank you!

Hi, all, sorry for my delayed responses to many of these questions! Since so many of them are similar, I’m going to forgo responding to each directly and just stick to common topics for now:

EA deadline: Our EA deadline has been extended to November 8 for students experiencing difficulty with the Common App. If you are not having Common App issues, we encourage you to still submit your application by November 1. We are aware that the Common App’s website currently states our deadline as November 1 but the Common App for UChicago will still be able to be submitted through November 8.

Essay word limits: We require that your short-answer essays are no longer than 500 words. We recommend but do not require that your extended essays stays around 500 words as well. While we won’t as a rule stop reading after 500 words, we cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention for as long as you’d hoped it would! Please be kind to your poor admissions counselor, who reads 1,000+ applications per admissions season, and stick to our suggested limits!

UChicago accounts and IDs: We are also experiencing difficulty receiving materials from the Common App and so many students may be delayed in receiving information about their UChicago account. Do not worry-- your account is coming, it just may not arrive in your inbox directly after you submit your application. Rest assured that we will contact you directly when we have downloaded all of the material we have yet to download if we find that any of your materials remain missing (which we do not think will be an issue, so no need to stress here!) Your application is considered on time if it is submitted by our deadline even if we are not able to download it until after that time.

Hi, quick question: is the Why Uchicago essay weighed as heavily/given roughly equal consideration as the extended essay?

I really think my why u of c essay expresses my desire to attend but I think my extended essay is extremely risky and I’m curious.

@UChicagoallday, we read applications holistically so no one portion of your application is given more or less weight than other portions of your application.

Mr. Rep Sir, would you think testifying before a county legislative committee would be something that should be included in a college app?

@CHD, if you feel that this represents a significant time commitment or achievement for you, you are welcome to include information about it in your application.

I have a question about Fin Aid.
I am applying to UChicago through Questbridge as a finalist, so when is my FA deadline, tomorrow or the 8th? I have not submitted any FA materials, but I have submitted everything else.

@danny, please submit your financial aid materials as soon as possible. We would prefer to have them today (Nov 1) but can continue accepting them after that time.

I submitted my Common App two days ago, but did not realize that the CSS Profile and signed tax returns had to be submitted on Nov 1 until I got the email to set up my UChicago account and looked today.
I looked around online, and got a variety of answers, so my question is:
Is it entirely neccecary to submit the CSS Profile to be considered for Need Based Aid, or is it just to get an estimation of aid that could be recieved with the EA decision. Could I instead just submit on February 1st and get aid information as if I were submitting RD?

Thanks!

My D applied in 10/23 but didn’t get an email for UChicago account. I wonder if she did something wrong in CommonApp. (I know her counselor didn’t complete her school report yet.)

Hi Grace,
I was wondering how I would go about listing my work as an extracurricular. My situation is a little complicated because I was not payed since I was working in my family’s laundromat. What can I do if I want to include that in my application? Thanks in advance!

Kai, please go ahead and submit your CSS profile whenever you can; our November 1 deadline is a “soft” deadline, such that we are still fully able to consider students for aid for EA with materials received after that deadline. We would need the CSS to be able to come up with even your estimated financial aid package and so if you waited until Feb. 2 to submit you would just wind up waiting quite a bit of time for any sort of aid decision.

Dad2013, we are still rolling out UChicago Accounts; have your daughter check the Spam filter of her email account as sometimes the email about the account is classified as Spam (even though it is not) by some email clients. If she does not find it there she’s welcome to call us at 773-702-8650 and we can make sure her account information is resent.

jasylata, you (or any student!) are welcome to include work (paid or unpaid) or family obligations in the “extracurricular activities” section of the Common Application.

One follow-up to the question above. My son submitted an application and supplement in late September/early October and received a UChicago account over the phone when he did not receive one by email. After a few weeks, his UChicago account still reads “no application received,” however, and the admissions office still has no record of the application itself. Any reason to be concerned? Or is this part of the overall download problem? Thanks for any advice/help.
