UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

mermaidgirl, at this time we have completed all of our interviews for EA; we try our best to accommodate all students but in some areas have difficulty matching students with an interviewer due to high demand or few/no alums in the area. Don’t worry, though-- interviews are not a required portion of our admissions process and we will give you our full consideration even if we were not able to accommodate you!

My account doesn’t show me a list of the components of my application and whether or not they’ve been received. It’s not that there aren’t green checkmarks, that part of the page is just entirely missing. Is it supposed to fall between the section for upload materials and the section for forms? Between those two sections there’s a small blank box, but every time I’ve checked nothing has been in it (and it’s not very noticeable so today is the first time I realized that something should possibly be there). My school sent all my materials, but I don’t know if they were able to be downloaded or anything because nothing is showing up on my application page. I may be panicking for no reason, but I’m just terrified that something wasn’t received and I have no way of knowing.

hi again  just wondering about what exactly the midyear report is. Do I have to send it in soon or is that only if I’m accepted? Thanks for your patience.

My daughter, an EA applicant, requested an interview, heard nothing, but finally made contact with UChicago and an interviewer today (12/3). Interview will probably take place later this week subject to scheduling. Does that mean it’s too late for it to be considered for EA?

DGzdad, no need to worry, if her interview scheduling is already in process we will happily consider her interview for EA.

Hello grace!

Where in my application should I let UChicago know of external factors that might have affected my high school grades?

I spent my 3 years of high school (international student) in 3 different schools (and 2 different countries); it took me awhile to adapt to each school and my high school grades suffered a little with this.

How can I make sure UChicago will be aware of this situation when reading my application?

Thank you!

brbrbr, I would encourage you to discuss this with your current guidance counselor, who may be able to discuss it in his/her recommendation for you. You may also feel free to attach a quick note in the “additional information” section of the Common App if you feel the need.

ok, thank you!!

Hi Grace, will the major and career interests indicated in “Member Questions” area make any difference in decision making process? Thank you very much for your feedback in advance!

Hi truepassion, we just use those areas to get a sense of what your interest may be, and to assure we’ll have a balanced class-- they are a small factor in our decision making, mostly in that we wish to make sure students who we admit have the preparation to be successful in their interest area. Since we do not require students to officially declare a major until their third year, we do not admit students specifically to particular fields or require that you remain with a program you indicated as an interest.

Hi grace! Thanks for answering all our questions! I was wondering if you saw my question. It’s a few posts bak on this page. Basically my account doesn’t show whether materials were received and I was wondering if that’s an issue.

tbmmfqn, oops! Sorry for passing that one over. So long as you don’t see any red “X” marks in your UChicago account, we’ve got everything we need to be able to review your application.

Hi Grace!
I am an international applicant and I sent my TOEFL score to UChicago very early on. But in my account there’s no “language test” item on the checklist so I’m not sure how I can ensure my score has been received. I didn’t receive any e-mail indicating “missing materials/test scores”. Does that mean my score has been received? (Or should I e-mail the international admission office to check?)
Thanks!

Hi Grace. So I’m just wondering when we EA applicants are going to receive our admission decisions. I know on the application status page it says “we will notify you via email in late December when decisions are available,” but what exactly does “late December” constitute? Can you at least give a range of dates? Thanks!

hi again  just wondering about what exactly the midyear report is. Do I have to send it in soon or is that only if I’m accepted? Thanks for your patience.

Hi Grace! If I’ve changed my mind about my intended major, would you recommend me sending a brief email update or simply leaving it the way it is? My mom decided I needed to do something practical (which in her mind was econ) but I think I’d be miserable as an econ major (as math is my least favorite subject) and think I would like to major in history. Thanks for all your help!

One more question: will the decisions be via email or snail mail?

Almostingit, we don’t require students to stick with the major they listed on their Common Application-- if you’d like to let your admissions counselors know of your new idea you are welcome to, but rest assured we’re not going to hold you to majoring in what you listed.

thebigred, when decisions are ready to be viewed online, we will send students an email with information about how to log in to and check decisions in your UChicago Account. Admitted students will receive follow-up information by mail, while deferred and denied students will only receive online notification.

Whoops, forgot to check questions on the last page! More answers:

doremi: if we have not contacted you to let you know your scores are missing, they have been received.

thebigred, I will certainly announce here when we have finalized our notification date, but we do not have a set date yet.

ironchariot, your midyear report is a transcript of your first semester’s grades. You should send it once your first semester grades have been finalized, which, for most students, will be sometime in January. We require this document of Regular Decision applicants and EA accepted or deferred students.

I am an international student from Bosnia and I have all of my classes in english (IB program) , with excellent grades 44/45 (7/7 in English B HL). My CR score was 720.
Unfortunately, due to very limited finances (household income of about $530 per month) I am simply unable to take the TOEFL. :frowning: Now, I know UChicago really insists on the TOEFL and I would gladly take it but… money. I sent them a mail explaining my unfavorable situation on Friday, but they still haven’t replied. Should I send it again? How can I get a TOEFL waiver?
