UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

banditx, haven’t forgotten about you! As a junior, we’re happy to hear you’re thinking about UChicago and it’s great that you’re starting to get more involved with the college admissions process. We encourage all students to consider a lot of schools where they might be a great fit by learning more online, starting to talk to your high school guidance or college counselor about your goals and desires in a college environment, and visiting some schools if you get a chance. We encourage you to make sure you take either the ACT or the SAT, hopefully by the Spring of this year, and definitely to make sure that you’re taking available of your school’s highest rigor-- taking advantage of that challenge is definitely the best preparation for UChicago you’ll be able to find!

Grace, how does one NACAC school know that a student has put down an enrollment deposit at another NACAC school? Do schools share this information?

Grace - thank you kindly for your reply, which D and I will take under advisement.

My daughter (as one of 1,200-1,300 EA accepted) received a handwritten card from a regional counselor of U Chicago. The writing is long and very personal. It even included how much she enjoyed reading my daughter’s specific essay. It’s a personal touch. How great U Chicago admission office is although some may not agree with me. Grace may deliver this feedback to other admission officers. :)

^Nice. Very nice.

In contrast to DGDzDad’s format for the “favorites” question, I was admitted EA submitting basically a list with a few small notes on each subject.

Grace, my son was accepted into UChicago in EA with a rather substantial financial aid package. However, we want to compare financial aid packages from other schools so he applied to H/S/P. From what I understand, when I fill out the FAFSA, UChicago will come to know where else my son has applied.

Will his applying to other schools be held against him in any way either in the FA package changing or even a rescinded acceptance?

@Dad2013-- so glad your daughter enjoyed her card!

@Jimmy1964, in no way will this be an issue for us; we understand and anticipate that students will be applying to more than one school and a student’s financial aid package is in no way affected by this, nor is his offer of admission.

I am still wondering whether UChicago shares the names of its enrolled students with other colleges. If so, this would seem to weigh against enrolling for purposes of securing a good spot in the housing lottery if UChicago is a student’s second choice and she is waiting to hear from a first choice school at which she was deferred ED. Can anyone answer this question?

Hi Grace!!

I asked for an alumni interview and I received an email from UChicago almost two weeks ago saying “your request has been received” and etc. But I haven’t heard anything from UChicago since then. Does that mean there aren’t any available interviews?

Hi Grace my son took a gap year and is now a member of the class of 2018. He received an email that a current student would call between the 7th and 9th of January and no one called. Also, there has been no scarf sent to him. He submitted his housing request and resubmitted his confirmation of acceptance. Should he contact someone?

Hey Grace,
I applied Early Action to UChicago and was deferred. (Which, to be honest, I’m still reeling from and disappointed in myself). However, it’s still my first choice and I don’t mind at all waiting for RD. My parents and other adults have talked to told me that I should send a sort of follow-up e-mail to my admissions counselor, letting them know that I’m still fully interested and invested in the school. According to them, it’s standard practice. However, seeing as I haven’t heard or read of anyone else doing this, I’m dubious. Is this follow-up e-mail something you commonly get from deferred students, or would it just be bothersome and unhelpful? I really appreciate your input. Thanks!

Hey Grace! It’s that time of the admissions cycle; I’m getting twitchy-eyed about my mid-year GPA. Due to some personal and familial issues, I’ll probably be going from a straight A student to an A student with 1-3 B’s (8 AP’s this year). How negatively would this impact my odds for admissions? Or, broadly, how does U of C view mid-year reports, and what weight do they carry? Thank you so much!

Hello Grace!

I have more questions…

I am an international student applying for aid. I went to the UChicago website and it says “Please scan your completed ISFAA and supporting documents and submit them online through your UChicago Account,” but I don’t understand which supporting documents I need to submit. Do I need to submit anything other than tax returns?

When asked about where I am applying to, do I have to include colleges that aren’t in the US?

Is it possible to don’t apply for aid even though I said I would on my common app application?

Also, the international financial aid deadline is not Feb 1 but Jan 15, right?

Thank you very much!

Quick question: do you guys know an applicant has been deferred once he or she is in the regular decision process?

I know people who have been wait listed as part of the RD process. Deferrals are only a result of Early apps

dubbadubba, we do not share this information with other schools.

brbrbr, we’re still processing a lot of our requests for alumni interviews, and students who we will be able to interview will continue to be contacted by alums directly through February.

Barbie4, sorry to hear about this! He should have received both. Have him contact our gap year coordinator, Brigette Kragie, at bkragie@uchicago.edu and we can definitely get things rolling for him.

dangerdmoney, if UChicago remains a top choice for you, you’re welcome to email your regional admissions officer indicating such. It’s not bothersome in the least (so long as it is of a reasonable length and not sent overly frequently! )

vctory, we do consider students’ midyear progress when we review applications; we hope to see the same record of achievement you’ve maintained throughout high school in to your senior year. However, we totally understand if personal or family issues might affect your transcript slightly; in this case, you or your counselor are welcome to let us know as part of your midyear report.

brbrbr, any questions about international aid are best discussed with our international team; internationaladmissions@uchicago.edu.

headed2great, we are aware which students have been deferred in our regular admissions process; rest assured this does not have a negative impact on our decision making.

brbrbr,
I have same question regarding the ISFAA. Have you heard back from UChicago?

Thanks
Sharon

Thanks for the reply. When do you guys start making regular decisions?

I was also deferred from UChicago. However, I would like my minister to submit a recommendation on my behalf. How should she submit the recommendation?
