So now that you all have gotten in, I figured you might want to ask a first year some questions. Of course, this upcoming week is finals week and everyone is scrambling to get work done, me included. That being said, to take occasional breaks from writing my essay that is due Monday, I'll answer any questions you have. Congrats to those who got in and fire away!

Thanks!! Just wondering, how is your class load and what are you majoring in?

Majoring in philosophy. The work has been incredibly manageable. It is quite shocking really. I thought I would be drowning in work but I’m not. Last quarter, I had 2 finals and 2 final papers. One of the finals was painfully easy and the other was quite challenging and I needed to study for a decent amount of time. The two final papers were manageable. I think I got fairly lucky though as some of my friends have a boatload of papers to write or finals to study for. This quarter, I have a very easy final, a somewhat challenging final paper, and an easy final paper that is already completed.

I must note that this is certainly not indicative of the philosophy major as next quarter, I’ll probably be swamped with reading as I’ll be taking three reading intensive courses.

Cool…that’s very nice to hear! Just another question, are there any specific classes that you would recommend to take (specifically core classes)? Thank you for answering these!

I did not do much of the core this year. There are some that plan to spread it out over their time here, like me, and some who try to get it done within their first two years. By the end of the year I will have finished the language requirement, the humanities sequence, and the social science sequence.

As for the humanities sequence. I took Philosophical Perspectives on the Humanities and thought it was OK. It was good if you like philosophy but don’t know a ton about it. A couple of my friends took Human Being and CItizen and love it and their reading list sounds pretty great. My best friend (i.e. my girlfriend) took Readings in World Lit and really disliked it.

As for Sosc, every one of my friends is either in Power, Identity, and Resistance or Classics of Socio/Political Thought and we all really like it.
