Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted? My application wasn’t geared very well to “challenging thought” aspect of UChicago. They likely didn’t see me as a good fit.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Find X: Talked about answering questions, why answering questions makes me happy, why I actually don’t want to find x, It was a lot of fun, good essay, not as “artistic” as some other UCHI ones I’ve seen, but very creative and revealing of information about my personality and how I think
Why UChi: Talked about all the things that make UChi great, the community of curious thinkers, the freedom of inquiry belief, … it was a long essay, I liked it
Common App: about weight loss, going from 267 pounds to 196 pounds, how I’ve inspired others to do the same, larger overarching theme of the selfishness of allowing myself to be very unhealthy while acting as a role model to my little sister and many others
Favorite things: talked about Sousa marches, crash course Youtube, Call of Duty, Cartoon history of the Universe, Walden, Toy Story, Lots of great things

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Recommendation #1:Can’t really rate it but I liked it a lot

Applied for Financial Aid?:YES
Intended Major:Mathematics
State (if domestic applicant):IL
Country (if international applicant):USA
School Type:Small rural public, 370 students, no AP classes offered
Ethnicity:Middle eastern
Gender:Male
Income Bracket:30-35k
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):First generation college student, rigor initiative in poor school, low opportunities in general and I’ve done well

Strengths:Rigor initiative, limited opportunities but good accomplishments in context, fun essays
Weaknesses:No interview (not that not having one is a disadvantage, but I think an interview would have helped me because I think I’m very good at interviews), no music portfolio,
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
I could have been more extravagant, I could have simply pursued more knowledge, do what I did, only more, maybe, like I said, worked for cash and taken AP physics, chem, Calculus at college during high school who knows, submitted a music supplement, joined more music groups, went to external competitions, maybe founded more clubs, inspired more change whatever
But I was strong enough not to reject…
General Comments:I’m disappointed. I know many will be rejected and look at me wishing they were in my position, and I’m sympathetic to that, but it doesn’t limit my feelings.
This gives me more hope for Brown and Princeton, as they are just as selective but receive less applicants from the midwest. Who knows how many Chicago Wait-list, I wish they would release some real numbers.

Other schools you applied to and their decisions:Accepted: Grinnell, URochester, UIUC,
Waitlist: Case Western (why?) UCHI
Denied:MIT, WashU
Waiting: Brown, Princeton, Carleton

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 10/10, I wrote one on finding Waldo, it was really creative in my opinion, completely fictional story, put a LOT of heart into it, I bet that’s why I even got this far, seen people with stats way better than me get straight up rejected.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10/10, UIL math coach, know her very well personally and as a student
Teacher Rec #2: 2/10, it was only afterwards that I read her recommendation letter, extremely generic, not even accurate on the few details, poor decision on my part.

Job/Work Experience: File clerk at my father’s company for 10th and 11th grade

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 9, from my Stats teacher Junior year, who then became principal for my senior year(assuming this held a bit more weight to it. Knew me well and liked me.
Teacher Rec #2: 7ish?, didn’t read it, but my Junior English teacher knew I was a hard worker, but letter was probably fairly generic I’m guessing.
Counselor Rec: 10, Been in contact with my counselor a ton, helped her write the letter, fellow classmates pitched in with information and views of me
Additional Rec: 10, from the Robotics moderator who also helped to create the aforementioned Clavius Project. Knows me incredibly well.
Interview: None

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major: Mathematics and/or Economics
State (if domestic applicant): Missouri
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Private, Jesuit/Catholic
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: not entirely sure, didn’t qualify for financial aid.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): not really any

Strengths: Clavius project and service, my “Apples and Oranges” essay, consistent interaction with admissions counselor, good luck.
Weaknesses: GPA low relative to my school’s previous attendees, didn’t do ED1 or ED2
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted? Tons of kids with similar stats and objective numbers as me, I think the admissions process is mostly a crapshoot and I got lucky on a coinflip and/or they really bought into the Clavius Project and I did a good enough job explaining what it is.

General Comments: Super hype, figured all of the ED kids would steal my potential spot if I ever had one to begin with haha. Super humbled by the acceptance. Excited to weigh out my options now!

Square 1: Talked about the chess board and turned the game of chess into somewhat metaphor of my life, I really liked the way it turned out.
Why UChicago: It wasn’t too bad but I was kind of generic and talked about myself being an “oddball” yet fitting right into the Chicago community.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10/10 English and Capstone teacher I’ve known for years
Teacher Rec #2: 8.5/10 Another English teacher I’ve known but she did so many recommendations I didn’t feel mine was special enough.

hey guys in having problems accessing my Uchicago applicant portal. Can someone login on my behalf I’ll message you my details.

@mrac Don’t do that! Email the admissions office if you need help - it’s a really, really bad idea for you to give personal information away online, let alone your login and password. If you must, ask a family member to login for you.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: Acdec coach for 3 years, adores me, so I assume 10/10
Teacher Rec #2: Art history teacher, I fell in love with her and her class and vice versa, 9/10
Counselor Rec: I know my counselor pretty well which is unusual in a large Tx public school and she is quite fond of me, still afraid it might be a bit generic, 8/10
Additional Rec: family friend and UChicago alumni, probably a bit generic but she’s very successful and very reputable so it must count for something, 8/10
Interview: went extremely well, interviewers first time interviewing and his wife and daughter were there. His daughter had just returned from a study abroad in France so we bonded over that. They also had lived in Italy (where I’m from) and happened to have mutual friends. His wife is passionate about art history, as am I. Really incredible interview. Couldn’t have gone better

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): moved around A LOT and speak several languages. Very “worldly”.

Strengths: my essays and summer activities were really unique I think. I worked very hard on those. My course load is pretty hefty, probably the most difficult offered at my high school, especially with Academic Decathlon.
Weaknesses: My GPA, I had to keep it low for AcDec purposes (you get divided into categories based on GPA). No subject tests.
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted? Definitely essays and summer activities.

General Comments: I am so thrilled to have been accepted, I was at the airport about to board a flight to Chicago to visit UChicago when I received the acceptance and i was ecstatic. SAT II: didn’t take
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t technically rank but I’m 1/68 (4.22 GPA)
AP (place score in parenthesis): 4 on APUSH (never sent score and don’t plan on it because it won’t transfer, school offers only 1 AP course [AP Calc AB] and the rest are DE, since I chose to take AP in a DE class I think it maybe helped me stand out but am not sure)
IB (place score in parenthesis): none
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, Advanced College Credit (ACC) Biology, ACC English 4, Electives (believe it or not this is the hardest schedule a senior can take at my school. It’s a small school. Despite this the academics are actually quite rigorous.)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nothing major. Won a couple of school awards (Math Student of the Year & Social Studies Student of the Year) and won St. Louis County Outstanding Student Leader Award

Subjective:

Summer Activities: Work and ^^^
Essays:
Common App: (7/10) I told a good story in my essay but not the best written. I am very critical of my own writing though. It had a good message though, and it probably resonated with the people in admissions.
Uncommon Essay: (10/10) Chose the square one prompt. Probably the most eloquent and poignant piece I have ever written. So proud of it and am likely going to use a lot of it in my graduation speech.
Why U Chicago: (5/10) I didn’t like this one (but hey maybe they did) I played off the idea of “Where Fun Goes to Die” and kinda turned it on its head to illustrate that I want to go somewhere where academics are the true priority #1)
Favorite Things: (8/10) This one showed my personality/interests more and let me show off my voice. I ended up liking it a lot, but I didn’t talk about pretentious academic things. I just tried to really show who I am and what inspires me.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: (9/10) Religion Teacher- didn’t get to read but its written by the best most friendly man in the world and I think he emphasized my participation in class, which from what I understand U Chicago values a lot.
Teacher Rec #2: (9/10) Math Teacher- didn’t get to read but it emphasized my enthusiasm for learning/leadership skills
Counselor Rec: (10/10) Actually got to read this one. Very well done and highlighted how well rounded a kid I am.
Additional Rec: none
Interview: none

Reflection

Strengths: Test Score, GPA, SQUARE ONE ESSAY!
Weaknesses: No SAT subject tests, not many APs or major awards, ECs aren’t that great
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Maybe it’s as simple as my being a Hispanic with a 34. Maybe I just got lucky. I hope it’s cause they think I’m interesting and would be an asset on campus but who really knows except the people in that admissions office.

Other Schools: Accepted to WUSTL, Truman State University (Near full ride), University of Missouri Columbia

General Comments:
Incredibly, super duper amazing excited!!! I hope that I can be proof to some kids out there that you don’t need to have taken 5,000 AP classes or aced a bunch of SAT subject tests to get in. Just put your best foot forward and show that you are an interesting person and they’ll love you. Also college admissions is a pretty screwed up system and somehow makes some kids believe that their lives are defined by a couple of acceptance letters. There are an infinite amount of ways to live a fulfilling life! Don’t let one rejection get you down. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you have to go to a name brand school to be successful! Give yourself some cheaper in state options, browse through a lot of schools, and just find the place that is right for you. Don’t bank on admission to a school that only lets 10 kids in for every 100 applications because it is in truth a crapshoot. My heart goes out to all those on the short end of this horrible crapshoot that is senior year/college admissions. Have a wonderful day!

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
I would say they were all about a 6-7. They were by no means excellent, because I’m not a great writer, but I think I fully answered the questions and inserted a little bit of my personality into it as well.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10, AP Physics teacher and quiz bowl sponsor
Teacher Rec #2: 7, AP lang teacher, he doesn’t know me as well
Counselor Rec: Not really sure
Additional Rec: I didn’t do another recommendation, looking back on it, I should have added my band teacher that really likes me and my Boy Scout leader.
Interview: It was pretty casual. I met at a Starbuck’s near my house and we chatted for half an hour. I’m not the best at carrying long conversations, but I think it went alright.

Other: National Merit Finalist

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Physics, Comp Sci as backup
State (if domestic applicant): IL
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large Public, 2600
Ethnicity: White as hell
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $160k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My parents both went to unaccredited colleges, but they turned out fine so I guess that doesn’t count. I’m also a second generation American, but I don’t think that’s a hook.

Strengths: Test scores, recommendations, extracurriculars
Weaknesses: Essays weren’t a weakness, just not a strength.
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
I honestly don’t know. I tried my hardest on this essays and put a lot of hard work into the application. I guess I’m just missing that “wow” factor. They have so many qualified applicants that would fit the “nerdy white physics major” niche that apparently I wasn’t good enough. Just goes to show how competitive these schools are.

General Comments:
Put a lot of time and effort into your application, it really is reflected in the final product. And just having great test scores or a great essay isn’t enough to get in. You need to have something special that only you can bring. For some, it is a special talent. For some, it is their ethnicity, because they will contribute to the diversity. Rather than focusing on only getting good test scores and being very involved in your community, spend a lot of time making something special about you. The best way to get in is to stand out somehow in the applicant pool.

Other schools you applied to and their decisions:
Got into UIUC, Michigan State, Northwestern, Cornell and Minnesota. Offered full ride at MSU, full tuition at Minnesota, and a few thousand dollars at UIUC. Probably gonna go to UIUC for computer science. I guess I’ll be more successful there anyways.

Favorites essay: 10/10 I used a definition of reality by Immanuel Kant to explain why some philosophers and painters are my favorite

Essays: I believe these were my saving grace. I tried to be unique, so I wrote a love letter for the “Why UChicago” essay. Each of my essays (CA, Why UChicago, and the Portal) captivated different tones and personalities, which I think was effective.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10/10. AP Lit + Honors English 3 teacher. We got along so well and she loved me.
Teacher Rec #2: 9/10. AP Chemistry teacher. Not my best class, but he saw me grow as a student which helped.
Counselor Rec: 9/10. She knows me well from dealing with personal situations, so I think that may have helped.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Prompt: 8- I picked a past prompt about a present you have received and inventing a past for it. I kinda went off a bit, and just came up with some weird tale of a pair of magic earrings. But I ended it nicely I think. It was pretty long though.

Why Uchicago: 8- You could really hear my voice when you read it. It was totally unlike all the other Why___ essays I wrote. In those it was a serious tone, focused on the things I would make use of and opportunities and blah, but with this one, it was more casual in a way, and more personal. I talked about why Uchicago fit me, and I didn’t include info about this class or this research opportunity. It was more fluffy. At first that worried me BUT GUESS NOT HAHAHA.

Favorites: 9- I really enjoyed writing this one. The favorite thing for me was a poem that I had written a few years ago. I talked about how the poem represented ideals I wanted to keep and how Uchicago would be perfect for that. In the essay, you can really hear my voice because it is very conversational and I speak directly to Uchicago in it.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 9/10 I was really close to my World History teacher, even before I had her as a teacher, and she really liked me. We still talk all the time.
Teacher Rec #2: 7.5/10 My physics teacher wrote this one. I wasn’t that close to him, but I think he had enough info to write a good rec for me.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 I wasn’t super close to my counselor, but she has a good impression of me, and she had a lot of information to work with.

Additional Rec: 9/10 I’m honestly just guessing on this one, but I’m assuming it was good. It was from someone from the organization I volunteer for (IWLA) as an archery instructor. She and I were close, and she and her husband wrote the rec for me. Her husband is an alumni of Uchicago, and said that he wanted me to go there cuz it’s awesome lol.

Interview: 8/10 It was my first college interview, and I didn’t know what to expect. Some topics came up that I wasn’t familiar with, but for the most part we had a nice conversation. I did have to debate the pros and cons of several policies, and throughout the interview I had to think quick to answer some of the weird questions. There was conversation about current events, policy, etc. But one downside of it was the alumni was someone who went there for grad, not undergrad. She couldn’t answer some of my questions.
