This may sound dumb, but I’m honestly really happy I got wait listed.
I’m actually not interested in attending uchicago anymore, haven’t been for a couple months, but this wait list letter means we ARE competitive and are great students and deserve to apply to the most selective schools in the country.
December 17th, I remember it very well. The only Early Action application I’d made was to Chicago. I refreshed the page for hours, hoping that I’d get accepted.
Deferred.
After that, I kinda gave up on getting to Chicago, and moved on. This morning, when just checking my email. I saw that my application decision was ready.
Accepted.
I’m so happy.
@AidanJM Awesome! I’m happy for you as well.
DEFERRED -> ACCEPTED!!!111
I’ve been rereading Harry Potter for good luck. I give it all the credit for my acceptance to Hogwarts irl.
Are any other accepted students having trouble joining the fb page? I’ve been denied twice because my fb name doesn’t match my real name. I messaged and emailed the admin but I’m still not in the group.
I got accepted. As a University Scholar. Honestly don’t know what to make of this. It’s not that I don’t want to go, cuz I totally do. But UChicago was my “hey, why the hell not” school, and I didn’t really put much thought into whether or not I’d want to go if I was accepted because… well, I didn’t think I was going to be accepted. I just signed up for the overnight program, though, so I can get a clearer picture of what UChicago is like.
Just… wow. Still in shock. I mean, to put it into perspective, I submitted my supplement essays about five minutes before midnight on the deadline day. I wrote them just before that.
Jesus.
Congrats to everyone else who was accepted, by the way! See you there (maybe???)
@adalayde I feel the same way about MIT! During the application process, I put all of my emotional investment into UChicago only to end up being waitlisted. I knew it was a reach, but I was still devastated. Today, I got into the school I put zero emotional investment into, MIT. Like you, I was just thinking “what the heck, it couldn’t hurt!” Now I am put into a very difficult situation. I accepted a place on the UChicago waitlist, but it would be very difficult turning down an offer from MIT.
@uclabound1 Oh, wow, congrats on MIT! And so far I’m not in that position, because, besides one of my safeties, this is the first decision I’ve received. Once I get other decisions, though, I’m afraid that’s what’s going to happen.
Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide to do!
anyone from greater San Diego area got accepted? anyone going to the reception at San Diego?
Too late to join in on the discussion?
I was waitlisted, which is shocking since I wrote all my supplemental essays literally three hours before the application was due and my family was at a hot springs lolol
I hard somewhere that we have to write a follow-up letter if we get waitlisted. Does anyone know if this letter (thank you for considering me as an applicant, thank you for offering me a place on your waiting list, etc.) has to be emailed or sent in through snail mail?
@snowboardchick97 I think what really makes a difference is just emailing your personal regional admissions counselor. A short genuine email seems to really make a difference according to last year’s thread- anything more could be seen as ‘excessive’ (just my opinion!)
Waitlisted! Still completely shocked about it. Gives me a bit of hope for my other applications!
@mahoushojo I’m from San Diego! Not sure if I’m going to the reception, though, since I live pretty far.
@aqua62 so email would be appropriate? Other websites made it seem like I had to send them a handwritten letter through the postal service so just wanted to make sure
@snowboardchick97 I mean, it’s up to your discretion of course, but like on the UChi portal once you accept the waitlist offer, it has like a little list of “things to do”, one of which being to send your regional officer an email. I’m sure that you could mail one in, but then I think it would be added to your portfolio, and I think directly contacting the officer would be more desirable- but that’s just how I’m going to go about it (: I think it’s just personal preference!
@aqua62 okay, thanks for the input!!!
Sooo I got waitlisted… I accepted my spot on the waitlist, but how do I express my interest in taking a gap year?
I am a Mexican-American male from Santa Clara, CA.

I hope this information is of some use to future applicants. Furthermore, I know two other students at my high school who were wait-listed at UChicago as well. Both had much stronger portfolios (i.e. higher SATs, orchestra, student government, sports, etc.).
WAITLISTED
absolutely in shock, I was turned down by UCSD and Cal Poly SLO
@adalayde, oh okay! Congratulation btw. Have you decided to enroll or still gonna wait for other schools?
