UChicago Study Abroad programs

Hi Everyone, so I'm an EA admit for 2018, and I wanted to ask everyone what their study abroad program experiences were like. I'm right now looking at programs at the study abroad programs that Chicago has with LSE, and the Indian civ program. Please share!

Also, if anyone has anything about the application process - is it competitive, onerous, and so-on, and how do they differ for different study abroad programs?

I didn’t go abroad.

My information is at least six years out of date.

I don’t think the India program was an option when I was in the College

BUT

Chicago has made a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge push for international education and experiences that was a big initiative during my time in the College (thanks, Dean Boyer!) so I kind of saw the tail end of it. Essentially:

Study abroad programs are popular and competitive, varying on the program. I am pretty sure they try to give everybody something, though not everybody gets their first choice.

The LSE program is probably less popular, because it’s a whole year. I know one person who did it.

If India is a big deal for you I would start talking to your advisor from day 1 about putting together a strong profile, that would probably include a lot of classes in the South Asian Langs and Civ major even if you want to major in international studies or sociology or econ, for example. You should also ask around about non-Chicago study abroad funding through government programs, foundation programs, and so on. For example, should your interests happen to be sociology/econ/India, you may be connected to other organizations outside of the UofC that would be happy to have you attend a program.

In other words, be flexible, be ambitious, be creative, and you’ll be great!

Thanks unalove! Are there GPA requirements for submitting apps to the study abroad programs? I’d like to do the tutorial system at Cambridge as well, i think it sounds like a phenomenal program… and I love LSE as well. Eh,… Idk about the Indian civ program, I think I’m going to look more closely at the direct enrollment programs though. Do you know anyone on CC who has gone to a study abroad program at Chicago, and who you could connect me with?

hm, I’m way too out to be of any further help here

I’d check out http://study-abroad.uchicago.edu/</a> for more.
