I was accepted to UChicago EA, and I was wondering if anyone knew about the swimming team at this school. Although its D3, I know that it is still extremely competitive, like at all schools. Does anyone know what the standards are to be recruited? My 200y is extremely mediocre, 2:50. I know I can bring it down, but I only want to be on the team to be in that collective atmosphere again, and swimming because I love it so much. Obviously, even the athletics at the worst schools would say that this time is horrible (notwithstanding the existent competitiveness at UC), but I still want to partcipate in athletics... am I in over my head??

That is probably something better directed at one of the coaches of the swim team. They are awesome people, so don’t be intimidated to send them an email. You can find their contact information at athletics.uchicago.edu. If you decide that the Varsity swim team is not for you, you can still swim! There is free swim at the pool daily, you can get a job teaching lessons to really adorable kids or you can lifeguard. There’s also an intramural swim meet that is great fun each year! Good luck!

The standards for the swim team aren’t too high, as most UChicago students are deathly afraid of the water. This explains their substandard hygiene practices.

^ Haha, that was pretty funny! But truthfully, the men’s swimming and diving is pretty highly ranked in the nation (#11), so ostensibly it would be more difficult to make their team than the women’s team (although they’re doing well at #16, too). However, that is really something you should contact the coach about.

Personally, I’d just keep practicing. Two years ago, I expressed interest in basketball and soccer and played for the team. Then I quit because of school. Now, if I ever go to university, I’ll probably be playing for an intramural team or even maybe the uni team, in either track (100m decent sprinter here, or maybe 200m), b ball, soccer or football (play with my friends often). Now during second semester, where i only have classes every second day, I’ll use the off day to train myself. Just go for it, you seem like a good athlete

I’m sure there are club sports and such, but I’d say if you want to be on the team, you’re going to have to cut off about a minute of your time. Are you on a high school team right now?

Well, I’m a seasonal swimmer, and I’ve swum for three years for my high school team. I really have been dedicated, but I also know that I’m really slow.

I contacted the assistant coach of the swimming/diving team a few weeks ago, and he told that I would have to drop a significant amount of time to join. He also said to keep him posted, which means he didn’t outright reject me ^_^…

I just really love to swim competitively and recreationally, though I guess intramural allows for that as well. I told him I would continue training as much as possible and giving it my all, maybe there are tryouts or something later. I know I can drop the time, but I don’t know about making the team. In any case, at least swimming doesn’t have to end :)
