Uchicago track

Hi all,
What times does Uchicago’s track coach look for (specifically in the 1600 and 3200)?
I’m only a sophomore, so these will be a bit high, but I would guess I could get a 4:40ish in the mile and last year I got a 10:17 in the 3200 at state. By how much would these need to improve? Thanks

(P.S.: Yes, I have the academic numbers necessary)

Well I doubt you will get that detail here, but I imagine that at the track meets UChicago participates in they will have times posted for their runners. That should give you an idea of what times you should be getting close to.

Hey, my son is on the track and xc team. Your best bet is to check out the track page on the Maroon website. Times are listed. The Maroons are better in the mid and long distance categories. PM Me if you need want more info.

Your Sophomore times are pretty good. Keep working.

Hey. I was wondering how helpful the coach was in getting your son admitted. Does he have a big say in admissions?

I am not too sure. He said he would advocate for my son and he got admitted. And he was given a likely letter so he knew last October/November he would get in so I’d like to think so. However, he may have been admitted anyway and am not sure if that played a role. He was a pretty strong candidate. National Merit Scholar, 1540 SAT, 35 ACT, strong leadership and recommendations. He had good track times, but not exceptional. 1:57 800 and 56 400. So, I’m just not sure if the coach had more pull or if was the rest of the application.

I do know that the communication between him and the coach didn’t really heat up until the summer of his rising senior year. It was a little frustrating because other programs responded to emails while UChicago didn’t. It turns out that is just the coaches personality and he doesn’t really work on the incoming class until then. We made an appointment to meet him on a school tour in the summer and it all worked out.

FWIW, he is a distance guy and the class seems to lean heavy on distance runners. It also appears that distance runners also tend to be better students, so the competition is a bit tougher at the long distance end of the spectrum. If you look at the teams performance, they have had more success at long and mid distance than the sprints.
