Though seemingly one-sided, I must attest to the fact that this is becoming somewhat of a dilemma for me. Granted, the University of Chicago is a world-renowned institution, ranked No. 8 on the "US News and World Report", contrary to the University of Washington, a "public Ivy" ranked No. 42, and considerably less prestigious than the former.

However, for me, I'm not sure exactly which one would be better. I'm on an undecided major, so that solves nothing for me. UW is about 30k cheaper than UChicago, abd I don't have good financial aid at either of the places (I'm assuming that my Chicago aid sucks...since they aren't exactly the most generous when it comes to money). I'm not even in at the Honors program at the UW, but I will be able to attain an internship at Boeing starting my freshman year.

So...which one is worth it? 30K more for UChicago, or settling with the state school UW? Is there even a competition here?

I wouldn’t consider UW hardly “settling” at all. It’s a great school, and if you would really have to pay 30k more for Chicago, I would choose UW. I was accepted to both UW and UChicago and was offered a full tuition waiver at UW through the Honors program, but I would choose UChicago over UW, because Chicago offered me good financial aid (but I’m waiting on Ivy decisions tomorrow! AHH).

Basically, if it was a 30k difference, I’d choose UW. By the way, I’m also from Eastern Washington…

Hmm…compared to UChicago though…I think settling. I just have a tough time condoning with the fact that I would have spent four years working my butt off to go to an institution that I could’ve gotten into by being a bit more normal. If I had Honors, that might be a bit different, but I don’t so…

And yes, Ivies tomorrow. Freaks me out. I have five.

There is a route into honors for UW students after admission if that is what one wants to work toward. UW and UChicago are quite different and offer different experiences. As far as prestige, if one stays in Washington, UW is hard to beat in terms of name recognition and respect.

I think it’s tough to answer especially because you don’t know your major. If I were in your situation, I would base it off of whether or not i would be going to grad school on completion of undergrad. If you’re going to grad school, then where you go undergrad isn’t that important, so you’d want to save the money. However, you don’t know if you’re planning for grad school or not because you don’t know your major .
Ultimately, I think of 30K a year as a LOT OF MONEY! over four years, that’s 120k difference, and don’t see a UChi education being worth that much more than a UW.
I say that as long as you can see yourself being happy at UW, go with the bargain.

note, this is coming from somebody that was 100% in love with UChi and was rejected

Echo, I’m actually in the exact same situation as you, except I am UW Honors with a first year scholarship. But I really love Chicago and I want to get away from home for college.

All the reasons you have are really valid, and I’m stuck in the same conundrum.

@chasdu: Cause you’re on the NC Knowledge Bowl team. And my mother knows your mother, I think.

idad, I don’t really know if I want to stay instate.

MBP: I do intend on going to grad school, but I want to go to one of the Ivies or Oxbridge for that. Where I go to undergrad does count for that, I think…

iinviere: It’s difficult, isn’t it? I’m so inclined to pay for UChicago, since it’s simply amazing, but at the same time, I’m questioning its practicality.
