I was admitted as an applied mathematics major to both schools. Barnard’s mathematics courses are pretty limited, so I think I would be at Columbia a lot of the time. A lot of my teachers/my dad believes that Barnard is worth it and that the quality of education there is far superior to UChicago’s.
As for financial aid, UChicago gave me $45k from their grant (is their aid consistent throughout the years; will it suddenly disappear in the second year??), and Barnard gave me $10k in merit. I’m looking to negotiate with Barnard (anybody knows if it’s possible?),
I’m not sure I’m very matched to Barnard at this point, since the Facebook group is very feminist/correct pronouns/identifying gender and sexuality heavy. I’ve never been much for that, but I’m still visiting the open house!
Also I’m painfully introverted, and would like a place that will make me more open and able to voice my opinions.
What’s their evidence for that? What’s their reasoning? I find that a very strange claim. UChicago is certainly not for everyone. There may be good reasons not to like it. I don’t think sub-par quality of undergraduate education is one of them. I certainly don’t think Barnard is clearly worth a big price premium over UChicago.
If Chicago is offering you much better FA than Barnard, that’s a good reason to pick Chicago.
Otherwise, visit both and decide which one offers the better “fit”.
