This may be ill-placed, but due to a lack of a better alternative, I resort to putting it in here. I have been accepted into both UChicago and Georgetown EA. What would you guys recommend as where I go next year? I will be studying bio. I know, I know, I need "to experience the places for myself." And I have, and I am, well, lost. I need some advice! Where would you guys go if given a choice between UC and Georgetown? Thanks!

Why would you EVER go to Georgetown?! Chi-town is SO much better! Forgetting the universities for a second, Chicago is a much more exciting place than Washington DC anyway. If you're one of those people obsessed with US World News Rankings, you'll see that Chicago is number 9, and GTown is 23. But, just personally speaking, I much prefer Chicago. I visited Georgetown and thought the place looked like a hospital. It has a very uniform set of views among it's student body - I encountered a lot more diversity of thought at Chicago. Academically, Chicago is much more rigorous, but, for me at least, that's a huge attraction. At Chicago, you are guaranteed to find some of the most interesting and passionate student bodies in America. So, to sum up, I would go to UC. Hands down. No questions asked.

I agree w/ PBE, but U of C is not for everyone... If you're a quirky intellectual do the Hyde Park route; more mainstream GU might be your cup of tea. Undecided? Do Chicago over Georgetown.

You're on the Chicago boards. I think you know what we would say :-)

Honestly, though, better to make this decision for yourself rather than to rely on somebody who told you something on the internet!

visit them and then decide which one you like

Congrats, titanicus - you have wonderful options.

Sometimes students start making a list ... pros and cons of each. The act of making the list may clarify things for you.

thanks guys! I think I've made up my mind - UC!

That was unnecessarily quick. You have lots of time to think, you know.

Geesh, have you posters ever lived in DC? To say Chicago is better is crazy.

FWIW, I lived in Hyde Park before I moved to DC 2 years ago. It is impossible to compare DC to Chicago because the regions are so different. I personally far prefer DC, but mostly because of the charms the area has, coupled with world class museums and culture that is as (maybe more) accessible than culture in Chicago, especially if one lives in Hyde Park.

Regarding the two institutions, since their strengths, culture and approach to education are so different, again, it is hard to compare. FWIW, Georgetown is much more like Northwestern than UofC: preppy (very preppy), pre-professional and located in a wealthy area.

^Speaking of Georgetown's strengths, science isn't one of them.

^Oh. So the typical UofC student takes the science offerings to the limit?

SL, this is not grad school. Efforts to compare departmental or disciplinary strengths among strong undergrad institutions is a waste of time IMHO. In fact, there are some who feel that some "strong" programs may not be the best for undergrad education because of a focus on grad students. So maybe you can come up with a better criticism?

UofC hands down.
