Much of my day is spent in translating between 'programmerese' and 'end user' so I regularly work in two dialects. I am frequently too technical and not clear enough at the same time :-(

Our little 'comparing notes' misunderstanding is pretty comical, but I suspect that more that a few mischances of history have resulted from similar missed communications. We native speakers can try to be more sensitive to this. As non-native speakers use this forum, they more sensitive to nuance - and I hope less shy about asking if something seems odd.

One of the points of a discussion (as opposed to an arguement) is to learn from each other. We have at least accomplished that in some small way.

Indeed it is. What is interesting is the view held of the University from "outside" the University, but inside of academe. It does often boarder on the mystical (applies primarily to undergrads, though there is a little of it for grads as well).

Okay, another story. At a recent dinner with an older acquaintance, some other friends and S, the typical "What school do you attend?" came up. S said Chicago. The acquaintance leaned forward from across the table and said, "I earned my Ph.D. at Chicago and taught at Harvard, but I would have considered it a far greater achievement if I had earned a baccalaureate degree at Chicago, that is truly an accomplishment, there is no finer undergraduate school in the world."

iDad, you seem to have a plethora of genius friends, neato. My neighbor who got his Phd at Harvard shares your acquaintances view btw.

This thread makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.

...And really really really wanting to get in.

Me too... I can feel the hair growing on my insides and making me feel fuzzy, like a grizzly bear.

I also like to read idad's and ohio_mom's posts.

Well, after sharing a laugh with ohio_mom , I think I am done. I am glad to leave on a good note. U of C is an awesome academic institution and I am glad that at least the CC students that are attending, love it there. Good luck to all the prospectives and thanks to all those who have been taking the time to have a meaningful exchange in here!!! I hope that I make the right decision as well!!

Yeah, and guess who started this thread... me! Haha, glad that my "featured thread" can make others feel fuzzy on the inside

They're Switching To The Common App???nooooooooooo!!!!

Really? I don't see it's a bad thing at all.

Wow, I must share in these warm fuzzy feelings. As an international, I didn't have much information on U Chicago, and I've gotten accepted! Thats the U.S. choice school I'll go to, if I turn down my offers from London...

Also, this thread made me feel a lot better about being rejected from Penn and Cornell. I was beginning to feel like I wasn't "good enough for Ivy League" but after reading all these really heartfelt stories, I feel like going to U Chicago is going to be a better decision than attending Cornell anyways, especially since I'm one of those extremely critical and complicated thinkers who wish to be fed and nurtured in the academics. Also, Chicago is a cool city :P

JM8879, UChicago's name is also very prestigous in India, and India and China are neighbouring countries ^_^

I'm an undergraduate at Chicago, and yes, worry about name recognition does exist on the back of the minds of many at this university. However, the important thing is that the corporate world and academia are all acquainted with it.

Although, with the new administration, I believe public perception of the university should grow, especially as more students apply due to the US News Rankings.

Another thing you should consider is that most of a University's prestige really comes from the graduate programs of Law, Business, Medical, and PhD programs in different disciplines, and it tends to trickle down to the undergraduate simply because they share the same name.

Also, if you are still worried about name recognition, go to an average person and ask them if they have heard of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Penn, Dartmouth. Of course, I'm not speaking of Harvard or MIT, but I highly doubt the average Joe has a clue about these institutions, whereas we have all had our sights on them since a young age. It's not really clear to me that in the corporate and academic world people respect Brown or Duke University more than Chicago.

Think about it, does your local grocery store cashier know Cornell?

To answer the original question:

They are not familiar at all.

what was the original question again?

Hey everyone interested in UChicago!

I'm a writer at the Uchicago's student newspaper, the Chicago Maroon.

I'm writing an article about how high school students perceive the University.

I'd love it if I could get your insight! I want to hear from prospective students, alumni, students who decided not to come to the U of C, students who are vaguely interested, people who would who are already in love with the school, those who got rejected, waitlisted, accepted, those who decided to go to an Ivy instead of the U of C -- I want to hear from everyone!

Send me an email if you're willing to talk to me about your experience. I really hope to hear from you!! (SJEROME@UCHICAGO.EDU)

Thanks,
Sara

fyi, I had a summer job interview today. Te guy interviewing me, for a stupid canvassing job that I don't want, after I told him where I was going to school, said "wow, that is such an amazing school!" and after another question, didn't look at my application and just offered me the job. Granted it's just a summer job but still, it was nice.

Yep, very impressive...

I thought I had put this story in this thread already, but apparently not.

When my daughter was deciding which college to attend, she went through a couple days of doubt before she accepted the offer from Chicago (vs. a good LAC and some other urban schools, not HYP). I was talking about it with my next-door neighbor, a non-MD medical school professor and research scientist with Ivy League BS and PhD. His reaction: "Is she nuts? Doesn't she know that when you apply to graduate school, the University of Chicago really means something?"
