UChicago's name recognition...

iloveschool, I agree completely about Stanford's econ. And the fact that I'm in california makes the school have even more appeal.

actually warbler peking university or more properly, beijing university is a very famous one particularly for international relations. Its one of the top universities in China and considering China has a population of 1+ bil and the best of this 1+bil goes to beijing, its a crazy powerhouse.

Of course the english speaking world in general is not quite aware of it. But those in the know know that its really good.

so my uncle called from india when my dad told him via email that i'd gotten into college in december. i'm penn ED but up until i visited philly in sept, i was entirely fixated on uchicago for all of my high school career (i still am, but now for grad school). so much so that i fought with my dad every week for a year over his recognition inferiority complex with uchic. in any case, my uncle asked wat college and i said penn (and he obvi asked penn state & i said no) but he IMMEDIATELY asked if i'd applied to uchic && took up 20 min straight telling me how uchic was the best school in the world for everything and that if i didnt go there, id be wasting my life at any other school. & now if i didnt apply there for grad school, he'd consider me an american failure.
my uncles from a small village in central india. needless to say, i was a leeetle bit flustered. lol
ps: expect me in the fall of 2011 --> uchic is my 0ne love.

Hmmm.. then why "So.FL --> University of Pennsylvania c/o 2011"??

penn and chicago were 2 great options for me but i found penn's eastern location & size much more convenient for me. i dont regret being pennED (i <3 it!), i just rly want uchicago grad school :)

Ah, misread that, thought you meant class of 2011. Have a great time out there in PA.

paro -
families are amazing. Congrats on your UPenn acceptance - I'm sure you will be well prepared for grad school at Chicago in a few years!

thank u!!
& congrats to all u great uchicago-ers :)

it's a little disturbing that people in my family keep getting u of c confused with university of illinois - chicago :-p

Does it matter?

just a bit, for the same reason it'd matter to someone at u penn if people kept mistaking it for penn state

stop saying it doesn't matter! It does! If you worked hard to go to an elite school, people should know that--you have earned the recognition that comes with going to a tier 1 school. I don't understand why people say it doesn't matter because it does for a few reasons: People's impressions about who you are, respect, honor, jobs... lots more. For family members to think you are going to a state school versus an elite private school is a HUGE difference, and they should know what it is.

Those who you NEED to know about Uchicago do know about chicago.
The common people do not know about chicago. The common people's ignorance doesn't matter. I do not wish to gloat or be proud, simply get an education. if you care that much- go to harvard.
The professional world KNOWS.

aah, the common people. What miserable little fleas scavenging for normalcy in the garbage cans of genius!
I just watched a Mad TV episode about a valedictorian who quoted Hitler about not following the masses.
Really, nothing like a healthy dose of elitism to nurture our totalitarian potentials.

I don't think it really matters who knows that you're going to an 'elite' university. Over here on the east coast, whenever someone says 'MIT', 'Princeton', or 'Harvard', everyone is automatically impressed. But say something like 'Caltech', which is probably a better school than the three preceding schools I mentioned, and you'll get a 'Caltech... what's that?'

The common people know NOTHING about elite schools, but does it matter? If you need such acknowledgement, then I feel sorry for you. You should be content with yourself, not how other people view you. And as for what was said earlier, it's true... what really counts is that the people with the power over giving you a job or admitting you to grad school know UChicago's rep.

apparently my initial attempt to be ironic didn't get the message across.
what is with all the contempt for the "common people"? Since when did we begin making this distinction? What, exactly, separates you from the "common people"? And why the need for such a separation?

Oh, but you see, it's entirely necessary to scorn the common people because without their deference, there would be no one to recognize our greatness. And their ignorance of all schools beyond HYPS is only proof of their inferiority.

ha, ha... yeeeeah ok.

metonymy,
once again you have rekindled my love for your virtual presence

The great irony is that U of C, and most of its student body, revel in the idea that the university is a bastion of free, outside of the box, thinking. UC students break from the norm in their pursuit of accruing knowledge and wisdom.

I dont think a grade whoring, city on a hill mentality is germane with the aforementioned. :)

The more I read about Chicago, the more I want to get in. :(
