This is for students/parents who used the UCHOOSE roommate selection last year. How well did it match you with a roommate and are you still rooming with that person? S has set up profile, but has not yet started to contact kids. He is out of state, business major-not Capstone or other Honor program student. He wondered if the ever put non-Honors in the Capstone dorm and if so, how would you go about requesting that. Thanks for any help/insight you may have.

S tried to use the UChoose last year, put a profile in and made a match. Then they got lazy and the two of them missed the deadline for matching themselves. They're both in Honors and in Maxcy and went and found each other and have become good friends..they are part of a three man Honors apt for next year. He wound up with a random match and its been fine.
UChoose wont get busy until after the May 1 deadline for acceptance so tell your S to be patient.
As far as Capstone, I think they open it up if there's room..but a Capstone I think has to match with another Capstone. Not quite sure, maybe the Housing website has the proper info.

Hi, my dd is going to be going to USC in the fall. She filled out the UCHOOSE info, but has had better luck in connecting with other potential roomates throught facebook. From what I am aware of Capstone is only honors students (I believe). By the way, we are also from out of state. When your son signed up for UCHOOSE, I believe it is after deposit for dorm is given. At that time I believe my dd had to put her requests for housing down (5 in all). I do believe that Columbia is near the buisness school area, and that it houses 80 percent males and 20 percent males. Other than that I believe there are only two other dorms for freshman boys. I hope that helps, and if you have any other questions you can pm me. Good luck to your son. The business school is suppose to be really outstanding. By the way, has your son registered for orientation? You can do so now.

Daughter is a freshman in Honors College and used UCHOOSE to pick a roommate last year. Overall, I think it's been a good match. For sophomore year, the two of them will share an apartment with two more girls. Daughter does live in Captstone. I don't believe there are any students other than Honors and Capstone students living there, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the replies. We put down room deposit, which allowed him to set up the UCHOOSE several weeks ago. There aren't lots of choices for the guys, so he ranked the 3 in order of proximity to center of campus. Think Columbia was first choice. He signed up for orientation already and checks the roommate finder every couple of days. Loves checking the weather in Columbia. After shoveling a foot of snow on Sat. I think I'll take his place!

Hi Septembermom,
My son is going to be in the Capstone program, and I think Capstone dorm houses only Capstone students and some overflow from honors. Columbia Hall also houses some overflow from Capstone. Capstone students living in Capstone dorm must choose a roommate in that program. Columbia Hall is literally just a few steps from Capstone and the rooms are almost identical, because they are suite style - no hall bathrooms. There is a cafeteria in Capstone, and I'm sure it would be really convenient for Columbia Hall students. I remember that the bathrooms in Columbia are a bit bigger. I also liked the kitchens in Columbia - I think there was one on every floor. The rooms in Columbia have a long dresser built in under a vanity that makes the room seem slightly narrower when you first go in, but the rooms are very nice. If your son saw Capstone and liked it, I think he would be just as pleased with Columbia. I believe the other freshmen dorms for guys are McBryde, The Roost, and Bates. The Roost is actually like an apartment, with bedrooms, bath, and a small living room. The Roost is down near the athletic fields - and is popular with the athletes, I understand. Bates is not close to the horseshoe - it's down near the engineering building. Bates has hall baths - not suite style. My son also checks UCHOOSE and the potential roommates. I think the housing application, where the student lists a roommate choice, said you could make changes until May 1st, so I wonder if that is the roommate deadline. Anyone know for sure? By the way... you will love the weather down here - it's supposed to be 70 mid-week, and flowers and trees are beginning to bud.

Just spoke to S he's wearing shorts today
UChoose will get busy after April 1 so pay attention to deadlines (which he didnt) but dont panic yet over lack of postings.Parents obsess over these things way more than the kids do.
He says Capstone has good breakfasts,as does the Bates cafeteria (all you can eat) Roost is out of the way and popular with athletes.
The Capstone/Columbia proximity makes a nice mesh of students living in one area if thats important to you and there's parking there too.

S just sent in his enrollment deposit and request to live in Capstone, he has also accepted to be in the Capstone program. He is sooo excited to have finally made a decision. He chose USC over U of Pitt, VATech(instate) and Dickinson College. He also registered through UChoose...I got online yesterday and ordered a ton of USC stuff...window decals, tshirts...you know us moms!!! We are from Northern VA, anybody else coming from fairfax county?

Congratulations BB ! It does feel great to have that decision made, doesn't it? Now you can relax and enjoy these last few months with him home. We even bought a sweater for the dog when d made her decision . LOL

Congrats to BBVienna and S!!
Guess what T shirt I washed this past week when S was home? Thats right..the dreaded ***** shirt no mother would let their kid buy last year when they had accepted but not yet enrolled LOL

Hey, if my son gets Capstone, maybe we can hook the two of them up fro possible roomies.

His first choice is Maxcy, but who knows???

Congrats on having the decision over with. Isn't it nice to not have to worry anymore?

I looked at "School Store" also last week and wanted to do a little buying. Then I thought I had better wait just in case. (Don't want to jinx anything). I want to say that I really appreciate all the time and answers everyone has given to these "dumb questions". It has made this entire process much easier and I am sure the USC staff appreciates not having to answer the questions! Will be making another visit to school in April, so might swing into bookstore for purchases and save the shipping. Thought of ordering the paperplates and napkins (under tailgate section) for S graduation/off to college party later this year. Thanks again to everyone, you are all so friendly and helpful.

What a great idea about the paper plates and napkins! Hope you don't mind if I steal your idea...I'm giving S a BBQ/pool party for graduation, and now I know how to decorate!

Please go right ahead! Also am thinking about ordering M&M's in Gamecock colors, but they are kind of pricey! Husband thinks I am going absolutley overboard, but what the heck. Not sure how many come in a set of plates/napkins, but thought they would be a nice touch. Greenville, when is your S heading to orientation? You of course get out of school much earlier than us. We will be lucky if snow melts by June! It is 18 degrees as I type this. I thought it was spring.

that is a great idea about the M & M's. I would also love to order some. What wording are you going to put on them, you can have them customized by color and text. Does it help to buy in larger quantities? maybe several of us could order them and have them shipped to us separately...just a thought. I am also going to order cups, napkins and a "cocky" stuffed toy!

For those interested in ordering plates, napkins, etc. Party City on Harbison (not far from campus) sells alot of USC tailgating stuff. I'll be around there this week and will check the prices for yall. Might be cheaper without the shipping.
BBVienna - My D is going to USC. We are military, so we lived in Fairfax County for 2 years. ( She was in 6th and 7th grade) My husband was at the Pentagon the day it was attacked. She still keeps in touch with alot of friends in Burke, Annandale, Springfield, and Fairfax. As of right now, she doesn't know anyone heading south, but you never know.

bearbear, That would be great if you could check those plates/napkins. When we visit in April, I will try to find Party City if the prices are good.
Vienna-If you go to M&M website, you can choose colors, which are closer to USC's (I think maroon/black, but you can't imprint those colors. To imprint, they only give you basic colors to choose from. Red is closest to maroon, but no black is available. I tried out a few imprinting and on the computer they looked pretty good. Husband says, kids are just going to shove a handful in mouth and not look at printing!! Prices are 7.99/lb for colors, imprint ones I think were 11.99/lb. Give the sight a look if you haven't already.

At one of the events last year they gave out little bags of SC m&m's. I still have mine! They weren't imprinted, but were in a specially labelled bag and were marroon and black. I would just do the colors and put them in a cute container with a Gamecock balloon or something tied to it. ( instead of paying for printing). Maybe you can find the colored ones locally - I know our mall candy store sells them ( they have towers with all of the different colors).
Sounds like fun! Can we all come to your party? LOL

Septembermom,
Son is going to orientation on June 7th. We're going down on the night of the 6th (my last day to teach!). Staying at Hampton Inn on Harbison Rd. My husband and I signed up for the Parent's orientation program that day, too. We're also going to be driving down for the day on April 5th for a campus tour again and for son to take a look at Computer Engineering building and find out more about the type of computer he needs to buy.

Hi Greenville,
My son will be going on June 11th. He will miss 1 day of senior activities at high school, but wants to sign up for classes so there are more choices. Otherwise, he'd have to wait until end of June. Just he and husband will go, I am still in school. Not sure where they are staying. Son has also been checking out computers also. I remember wanting a typewriter! Boy have times changed.
