They will be release come Fall 2006. There will now be three Economics Majors: Economics, Quantitiave Economics, and Business Economics.

To add onto this: there has been talk in ABS (Alliance of Business Students) that the Merage School of Business is considering offering a business major for a select group of students. While this is fully plausible, the resources are not there to support the sheer amount of people wanting to be "business majors." So, as it stands, a business major is likely within 2 years.

I'll add more to your commentary (since I ran ABS this year) and say the Merage School will have capacity for about 150 students in its first year (which will be Fall 07). The econ department, not wanting to lose students, has preemptively created more appealing econ majors to retain at least some of the students who want to study econ but might want some business focused curriculum.

They should make the Merage School like Haas at Berkeley, where they make it competitive to get in with an application process after the second year.

alicante,

This is exactly what Merage is doing. Students do not get in as a freshman. Instead, there is an application process after Sophomore year and spots are indeed limited. Competition will be high to get in. If the accounting minor's GPA is around 3.64, the major should be just as competitive, if not more.

I'm really impressed with the progress UCI's making.

Awesome. What will the degree be? BA? BS? BBA?

I'm going to say it's a B.S. but I can't confirm that. From what I've heard about the curriculum, it will be very well rounded, with all aspects of business melded together. Dean Policano and Asst. Dean Bell have used University of Michigan's undergraduate business program as the model.

What if i am an incoming freshman in Irvine and i dont really know my major. I am thinking about business, but Irvine doesnt have any undergrad majors. However, i have heard about these new Undergrad majors that should be out for next year. I have applied to Bio, but i probably want to switch out to one of these two majors (that should be out next year.) Do you think it will be possible for me to get in? Will they even be out for current students or only for oncoming freshman?

Or should i just go to Santa Clara University. Any information will be helpful.

Thanks

Any undergrad majors will be available for everyone under junior year I believe.

The requirements for the new majors are up.

These are all about the new econ majors. I have heard that they are adding two new business majors, onne of them is Business Administration and i forget the other. Anyone know anything about this and whether i will be able to switch into it if i am an incoming freshman?

Here is the LA Times article about it.

how hard is it to get into the economics major at irvine?

its not hard - you just register as an Econ major. The end.

I to thought transfer as an econ major you had to meet all the lower division prerequisites, economtrics, probabilty for economics, etc. I have been accepted as a social science major but want to major economics. can I still get into one of these new programs specifically business econ. and how hard is it to get into the accounting minor.

I'm very sure it's easy to transfer into another major. In you situation, there is one drawback - a longer time at UCI. As a junior, you are expected to have your major set in stone, but I'm sure they'll let you change. The pre-requisites for the econ major is important if you want to get into that major (general conclusion from policies of other UCs other than UCI). As for the difficulty of getting into the major itself, it should be pretty easy.

an update about the classification of the business major. After talking to some admin folks at Merage, we will be unsure of whether it will be a B.S., B.A., or even a B.B.A. (bach in business admin, which has become very popular but highly unlikely since we're talking about the UC system here). At UCI, we usually save our BS's for our hard sciences but hell Cal's biz major is classified as a BS so in conclusion...

The wait ensues ;).
