UCI and UCSB sociology

i just wanted to know which school is better for a sociology major, and how good and respectable are the sociology departments for these schools compared to others?

also, do any of you guys have links or info of transfer students to UCI and UCSB and there acceptance rates/ gpa's? cant find em

For some reason UCI is the only UC that requires Calculus for their sociology class…or I might be wrong

From what I’ve seen, UCI requires calculus for all social science majors. I didn’t take a calculus class at CCC because when I called to speak with a transfer counselor about the requirement, I was told that there are alternatives I could take after transferring that don’t require calc (math is not my forte).

UCIopeful, so do you thinking me missing calc as a pre req would hurt me? I’m an anthro major and the whole calc 1 thing is throwing me off. I’m so horrible at math :(

calc for social science majors??? that sounds so pointless its funny.

thank you! Like, am I never going to use calc again for my major? no

^lol. When I saw the requirement on assist I actually considered changing my major or not even applying to UCI until I called. I’m an Anthro major also and I was reassured that it wouldn’t be a problem because if you look in their catalog there is a “statistics for anthropologists” (whatever that means) but because CCC’s don’t offer it they feel the only suitable alternative is Calc + Statistics. I can’t wait to take stat for anthrops and know I will not have to open a calc book ever again : )

Sociology majors who didn’t fulfill the math pre-req before transfering usually opt to take 2 to 3 stats courses at UCI. I believe “Intro to Stats” at a CCC can be petitioned to cover 10A, so then you’d just need to take 10B and 10C.

Anthropology 10A-B-C

Psychology 10A-B-C

Social Science 10A-B-C

Sociology 10A-B-C

Or the least favorable option 2 Calculus courses and 1 Stats course… Mathematics 2A-B, and either Mathematics 7, Statistics 7, or Management 7.

I would think UCSB would be better…just do some research. I’m a sociology major too- I’ll research it a bit and get back to you :)

I couldn’t find anything for undergrad, but UCI’s grad program in Sociology is ranked slightly better than UCSB.

Okay yes I’m a year late but this might help future applicants:
I rate my professor-ed about 90% of UCSB’s Sociology professors and it seems like there are a ton of good “easy” teachers. By easy I mean you learn something and get the A you desire. At UCI, the Calc is totalll BUZZZKILL and the classes don’t seem interesting to me tbh. Also make sure you visit the campuses. That will also help you make your decision. best of luck :-D

Hey Acoustickitty, are there good opportunities for sociology majors at UCSB? I am planning on transferring there this year.
