UCI Biomedical Engineering

Hows the biomedical engineering program at UCI? Is there demand for biomedical engineers? What state hires the most biomedical engineers?

A couple of years ago, Professor Ghassan Kassab left to go to Purdue. I’m not sure what happened to the UCI department after that, but it must have suffered, unless they brought in someone great to replace him. The undergrads were doing some pretty cool stuff when Kassab was there, but don’t know about now. Check out UCSD, Duke and Johns Hopkins too. They have very mature programs (many years). That being said, if there are more students in the program, that can be a plus (more resources) or a minus (less focus on you). If you have an idea what you would like to do, you can see which professors at different university programs do research in that area, and maybe you can do undergraduate research with them. However, don’t feel bad if you don’t know what exactly you want to do with your degree. Going to college can help you find that out.

Options in Bioengineering:

 1. Get PhD and become a professor
 2. Become a researcher in biomechanics (great for orthopedics-spine, hip, knee)
 3. Work on medical devices (catheters, implants)
 4. Work on medical electronics
 5. Get into medical school more easily

agreeing with ^ on UCSD (if you are already w/in the UC system or in-state). Was ranked like #2 or 3 for bioe last time i saw
