UCI biz admin or UCLA biz econ?

Im having trouble deciding between the two schools. I'm planning to take my CPA sometime after I graduate and i heard UCLA's biz econ with an accounting minor doesnt fulfill the requirements to take it. I also know that I have to apply into the bizecon major again once I finish a few classes, while at UCI, I already have a spot at in their business admin major. Business admin was also very hard to get into, but that doesn't mean get me better job opportunities after. I know UCLA's name is pretty prestigious, but if i cant get into the biz econ major and the accounting minor, it really doesnt help me..

Whats your guys' take on this?

business admin at uci is also very new…

UCI’s business school is really new, really hard to get into and really good. I’m pretty sure it’s harder to get into than Berkeley’s Haas school. That being said, I think you should go with UCI Business Admin. I am in a similar boat as you, because I currently go to UCI and have applied to the Business Admin major. They are only going to accept 15 change of majors and 15 transfers. So the fact that you got in is something to be proud of indeed. I wish you all the best and hope you see reason in the option of choosing UCI Business admin over UCLA bizecon…

I honestly think one day UCI’s Business Admin major will make a huge name for itself (there are only 3 UC’s with business admin majors and UCI is one of them)…you can be one of the lucky few that can say “I went there and was among the first graduating class.”

man… if my uci friends hear this, theyd be thanking you. My ucla friend probably hates you right now. lol. especially since hes on this forum and knows my tag.

I just read up on the ucla major. its hard to get into both the biz econ major and also the accounting minor… so id have to apply twice and it still wouldnt guarantee me a spot. Are you in biz econ at uci at the moment?

I’m in the same boat. Decisions decisions…
Berkeley, will you free me?

sandaboy, there are 3 UCs with biz admin.

best of luck to you back4good. Haas is gonna be hard as **** to get into… Do you apply into Haas or do you have to apply to it once you take a few classes at berkeley?

@ xelink

damn you’re right, I forgot UCR…good call

well UCR doesn’t really count as a school but ehh, it is a UC.

@ xelink

I think that’s why I forgot it  lolol

@Alan815: We apply under business admin, not pre-business. :]

@ alan815

yeah I’m currently in the Business Econ major at UCI

dont take this the wrong way anyone, but I personally feel that an undergraduate degree in business in’t all it’s cracked up to be. Econ tends to do better $$$ wise.

then again Ivy league doesn’t do business and most biz majors are form t3 schools.

“then again Ivy league doesn’t do business and most biz majors are form t3 schools.”
Could it be a good thing to hear for all business majors from t1 schools?

OP, if your goal is to become a CPA, go to a program that you can for sure to fulfill the requirement of sitting for the CPA exam after graduation, which is 36 quarter uniits in accounting and 36 quarter units in business. The public accounting firms would be more interested in whether you have the relevant course work, eligible to sit for CPA exam and the program itself, rather than the prestige of the school.

How about Wharton? And MIT, UCB, U of Michigan, NYU.

thanks watermark. that really helped bro.

those aren’t Ivy league. They’re Ivy league caliber but they aren’t Ivy themselves(save for uPenn).

all great schools, all target.

FYI Harvard and Princeton DO have business schools at the GRADUATE level if I’m not mistaken but I’m talking about undergrad here. The only Ivy bschool that I know of offering undergrad degrees would be wharton and even then that’s an econ degree…

Would I be at a disadvantage in terms of finding internships and looking for a job after college if I’m in a new program? I could possibly be in the first graduating class of the UCI business program if I decide to go there.

That’s a valid concern. However, UCI has been offering accounting minor for a while, so accounting track should only see better opportunities comparing with former acct minor in my opinion. As far as compare with other program, we will have to see.

UCLA’s Biz Econ does fulfill CPA requirements. Big 4 and many accounting firms actively recruit here at UCLA…in fact they do it so aggressively at UCLA which annoys me personally. I wished management consulting firms and banks recruited as aggressively as the Big 4 at UCLA.

I believe UCLA is one of the only few schools that Big 4 actively recruits on the west coast as it is hard to find a “good school” that offers programs that fulfill CPA requirements. Although I have no idea what the Biz Admin program is like at UCI, if you want to go into accounting, I am pretty sure more UCLA kids get into the Big 4 than UCI…at least in the LA office which is way more important than other regional offices.
