UCI Campuswide Honors Program

Prospective UCI freshmen who were invited to this program: What were your stats?

Current UCI students: Can I be reconsidered for this program if I have done exceptionally well senior year?

I'm afraid that I wont be able to complete my honors humanities course freshman year if i don't get in before i go there..

what do you think? thoughts?

thanks a bunch :)

COMEON GUYS!

Majoring in Political Science.

I got CHP.
you can see all my stats on my post in the official decision thread class of 2013.

This board got questioned to death with this topic about a month ago so I'm not surprised if many users who do have info are a bit tired to post them up again x_x

If you're asking whether it's possible to apply and get into the Honors program before the school year starts, then:

You can apply as a freshmen but their admission process will focus more on your college GPA and activities than your high school's. You need to have at least 3.5 college GPA to be considered, or so it's written.

You can still graduate from UCI with honors even if you haven't taken the Honor Humanities Course. Instead of taking these courses, you can instead take the default writing courses, Writing 39B and 39C, which are from what I'm told far easier to complete.

^really?
so do you know anything about it?

I'm in it, but I opted out of the program the first year after hearing horror stories about the Humanities Series. I being interested in physical sciences and tired of the concept and practice of "general education" and "creative arts" in high school, I avoided writing courses as best as possible during my first year. I applied and got accepted to the program for my sophomore year and the people behind the program told me I wouldn't have to take the Humanities series so long as I took alternative courses that satisfied the same general education requirements the Humanities series would have satisfied.

The advantage of the Humanities series however is that the 3 courses that make up the series will satisfy I think 2 or 3 GE requirements (writing, humanities, extra) which means you need to take fewer courses to meet graduation requirements. It's very rare for a single course or series to satisfy two or more GE requirements.

Sorry if I'm not writing well, finals week is over, and I've been rewarding myself to non-stop gaming for the last....9 hours.

^ I read it three times and I'm still not quite sure what you're saying.. lol
thanks anyways birdkiller :)
so get off CC and go enjoy your break!!! :)

I don't really wanna be CHP

I want to be honors student in my field thogh, like in drama they give honors to acting students, direction students, management students, etc.

oh yeah, it's the better honors program to be involved in anyways.. the one for juniors and seniors right??
... I just wish i knew more about this CHP program.. im going to the info meeting on the 18th... anyone else going?

Isn't that celebrate UCI?

yeah, I think so...or IDK, SOP maybe too

oh yeah yeah. that's what it is.
what the heck is the difference anyways? i dont know if you have to be invited to attend, but i RSVPed nevertheless. lol

Breakfastclub,

You can find a lot of information about the CHP here:

Current UCI Students

As others have mentioned, if you're not admitted as an incoming freshman, you'll need a minimum UCI GPA of 3.5 to apply. As the web site explains, if you enter as a continuing student AND HAVE NOT ALREADY FULFILLED THE GE REQUIREMENTS IN AN AREA, you'll be expected to take the honors course sequence.

In other words, if you come in as a sophomore and took regular HUM CORE as a freshman, they wouldn't expect you to repeat that... but they'd expect you to take the Honors Social Science Core and Science Core (unless you somehow managed to fulfill those GEs as well during your freshman year).

As haiku as mentioned, the CHP is only one of several honors opportunities offered to undergrads. Most (but not all) majors have honors program. All schools award Dean's Honor List citations each quarter. Graduating seniors are eligible for Latin Honors, and the very top juniors and top senior are invited to join Phi Beta Kappa.

What BirdKiller was alluded to is that many incoming students who are offered CHP decline because the require Honors Core course sequences interfere with their heavy (and structured) major course requirements... there are easier ways/courses to fulfill the GEs than the honors core sequences. So for some, the benefits of CHP aren't worth the constraints/requirements.

I actually want to be in Phi Beta Kappa, and department honors cause they offer CASH too :)

im a 2nd year honors student

the main benefit of honors is being surrounded by the intellectually inclined. honors kids as a collective tend to be very cohesive, at least my honors dorm was very social.

you can take regular hum core

i don't recommend it though, humcore is a waste of your time.

send me an IM if you have any questions. i'm also an honors program peer mentor.

shoefactory, what's your IM?
...so there's no way i can ask them to reconsider me before I come to UCI?
and does that mean CHP freshmen dorm collectively in the same hall or something?

oh, and thanks for the info, mamoose :)

We attended Honors Experience Day on 3/8. It seemed like a really nice program, especially for people going to professional or grad school. There are research opportunities starting Freshman year which may be difficult at some of the other UC's. The Honors housing was nice and the students said living there said that they have made good friends. I am still concerned about UCI's reputation as a commuter school though. Current students, what is your experience? Is the campus dead on weekends?

^hey, dont know if you had your question answered.. but here it is:
