Wooo! Cali bound!

Accepted as of today. Drama major. Local girl. 1940 SAT (best scores from each section). AP/Honors courses: 8. A LOT of theatre experience and awards. MANY leadership positions. Hundreds of hours of community service in last four years. Attended summer theatre program last summer on a scholarship. Weighted 9-12: 4.07, Weighted 10/11: 4.15.
ELC, AP Scholar. Applied to 9 schools, Accepted 3, waitlisted 1, waiting to hear 5. Great school for those from out of the area. Very close to Fashion Island (upscale shopping), beaches, awesome weather. The teachers and grad students I met last summer were really nice. If you are there in late summer buy tickets to the New Swan Theatre Shakespeare productions. They sell out quickly. It’s a unique experience. I will be going again ths summer!

[] Strengths: Extracurriculars, extracurriculars, extracurriculars, essays, SAT
[] Weaknesses: GPA ( T____T ), … perhaps major of choice?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think the obvious scientific focus that I placed in my extracurricular activities and essays (and the whole overcoming adversity part of my essays), as well as my relatively decent SAT score were the only reasons I even had a chance at Irvine. Just goes to show that GPA isn’t everything.
[/ul]General Comments: For everyone still worried and waiting for their decisions right now and in the future, I think that the best thing that you can really do is to remain optimistic and good things will happen. For future applicants, again, GPA isn’t everything as my case shows, so if you’re in a similar boat, I think it’d be helpful to bolster your extracurriculars, standardized testing scores, and essays as much as possible. I was rejected from UC Davis and UC San Diego, and I thought that UC Santa Cruz or even just flat out community college might be the end of the line for me, but I guess Irvine pulled through for me. I’m still waiting from Berkeley, UCLA, and UC Santa Barbara, but I am definitely not expecting much from them (though that would really make my day ;p)… These entire past few weeks have been very stressful, yet incredibly humbling. That first rejection from Davis definitely hurt and kind of threw me into a funk and depression for a couple of days, but I managed to stay optimistic and ended up getting into Irvine. So… don’t give up hope! Good luck guys and girls!

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): First gen college
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Extra curricular activities, ELC
[] Weaknesses: SAT Score
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I believe I got accepted because of my personal statement and extra curricular activities. It truly helps if you let the UC system into your life. I wrote genuinely about the things about myself and about my hardships which pushed me to be determined in everything that I do. My GPA is not stellar but I heard that UCs like a slightly upward curve in your GPA.[/li][/ul]General Comments: I truly believe that GPA is not everything with UCI, GPA is an aspect but to those who are still waiting, I believe that if you have a good resume and statement, you have a good chance. Don’t be pessimistic, instead be optimistic because you never know what their answer might be.
