UCI financial aid

I just got admitted to UCI and submitted my SIR. My financial aid information has not been released yet, but im curious if anyone can answer my question regarding the cost to go to UCI while I commute back and forth from home to school.

Since I’m commuting, does this mean my grant aids will be reduced significantly? I checked my net cost and it’s about 8,500-9500 with just federal grant, self aid, and family aid that’s it.

other UCs I checked, like ucla, have given me federal grant, Cal grant, UCLA grant, etc etc. Will UCI do the same? I don’t udnerstand why I have to pay similar to UCLA while im commuting from home to school everyday. I keep thinking my net cost would be lower like 5000-6500 b/c of not dorming.

Did you specify that you would be living on- campus when you applied or commuting? Each UC may give you different FA amounts. Did you run the Net price calculator for UCI?

@gumbymom Yes, on my FAFSA I stated I will be living “with parents.” (And on my uci “apply for housing” tab, it states that it doesn’t apply to me). My estimated net cost is around 8,500-9,500, based on that calculator.

Commuting? You must live pretty close to UCI. But yeah, it depends on the school. Some schools like UCI have priority funding so that may play into a factor here.

What is the average financial aid given to an out of state student?

@AbhayA: Unless you received Regents for UCI, OOS students should not expect to get financial aid from the California UC’s. If you are eligible for Federal aid, then that is probably all you will get along with Federal loans and Parent Plus loans. OOS students should be prepared to pay full fees at $60K/year.

Run the Net price calculator if you want to confirm: https://www.ofas.uci.edu/content/calculator.aspx

Received fin aid package yesterday. Said we are likely eligible for Blue & Gold plan but can’t tell us for sure until fall. Package is over $27000 in loans. Didn’t even throw in work study like UCSB and UCSD. Lame

Ya did anyone get scholarships, grants or work study? Or did everyone just get loans?

I got only federal and cal grants, no uci grants. I got presidential work study and the loans as well.

Hi I am an out of state student who only got loans to UC Irvine. I was wondering If paying around 180k to go to UC Irvine vs going to the university of north texas (instate) is worth it.

For a biological sciences major

It is only ‘worth it’ if you have the money to pay for it.

I agree with @twoinanddone that UCI is only worth the money if you have that money to spend. What are your goals as a Biological Science major? If graduate/professional (PA/Medical/Dental/PT) school is in the future, then spending that kind of money for undergrad is a waste, but only you and your parents can decide if the costs are worth attending.

Im trying to get a double major in bio and stats and than get a PHD in bio

Is it possible to spend 2 years at the University of North Texas and than transfer to a UC to complete my bachelors degree? Is transfer to UC from out of state more competitive than getting in as an OOS freshman student? I have been accepted into UC Irvine without any financial aid

@AbhayA I believe you can only get a double major IF two of the majors are related (Bio+Chem), but I’m not sure.

@AbhayA: As an OOS transfer, you would have the lowest priority for the UC’s. Priority goes by In-state Community college transfers first, then UC to UC/CSU to UC, in-state private university transfers and then OOS transfers.

Did you not run the Net Price calculator before applying to UCI? OOS applicants should expect to pay full fees at all UC’s and Cal states.

I checked my calgrant page the other day and it said the full amount I was to be rewarded but when I checked again today, it was gone. Should I be worried? Because I’m for sure eligible for a cal grant
