UCI for Premed

Could someone please enlighten me...

How does UCI compare with other schools such as UCD and UCSD for premed? Does it have a good advising program (eg. for CHP)?

Thanks

UCSD is the best out of those three

^^Based on what? US News Rankings of the two schools as a whole or your knowledge of premed advisors at both schools, the CHP, and undergraduate research opportunities at both schools?

based on the fact that more UCSD applicants get into better medical schools later when compared to UCI.

go to www.mdapplicants.com and search around, you'll find that many top medical schools accept more students from UCSD than from UCI.

K but you're not taking into account the CHP and both the opportunities it provides at the university as well as the extra "prestige". But, I'm not saying that UCI is better than UCSD, I'm just saying that you gotta factor these things in.

Ok call me an idiot, but what is "chp?"

when a student applies to med school, it's the undergrad institution that med schools look at, true the CHP will give a student more opportunities, but that factor isn't as important as the school "prestige" itself.

Maybe if youre talking about an honors program at a Cal State versus a normal student at Harvard.

@ #7

I was under the impression that medical schools didn't even factor in the prestige of a school, and that only gpa/mcat scores/extracurrics are the defining criteria. at least that's what the med students i know tell me.

That's what I heard too

Between a 3.9 at UCI and a 3.5 at an Ivy, I'm sure the 3.9 will be more highly regarded by adcoms assuming equal extracurriculars

Between a 4.0 at UCI and a 4.0 at an Ivy however, the Ivy would obviously be better

Personally, I'd rather go for a high gpa at UCI as opposed to attending Cornell for example and getting a 3.5 for the same amount of work (or even more!)

Plus, premeds from UCI do get into top schools like harvard and johns hopkins

And if you are CHP, you're chances of getting into a good med school are even greater (due to the advising and such..). Personally, I'd rather go to UCI and get a 3.8 than go to Berkeley and get a 3.4. but that's just me

A lot of the Ivies have grade inflation as well, and med schools know this. Not saying that a 3.8 at an Ivy is worthless, but people do tend to get good grades at Ivies and at UCs they go on a straight curve so getting a high GPA isn't easy.

Pre-med: I say go with UCSD.

My cousin is a doctor working at the Emergency Rooms in Kaiser Perm. in LA. He went to UCSD undergrad and then UCLA grad. And did A LOT studying abroad stuff for pre-med.

That's just one experience though, your cousin was probably an outstanding student and could have gotten there had he gone to another school. I mean, there are people who get into top med schools from Cal State _____ too.

It still all comes down to WHAT u do at the school guys...my sister is at UCI med and there are people from colleges such as Harvard and Yale to Cal-State Northridge. Go figure

transfer to SD or LA if u wanna do premed. <<<< period

uci 2009...you are clueless. Now go to the library and study.

I know UCSD is good for premed but haven't heard that about UCLA.

I'm quite sure UCI is a good place to go for premed, arguably not the best, but still competitive.

It still depends mostly on what you do during premed not if its UCI or UCSD

well i agree that undergrad pre-med...i mean where you go really doesn't make THAT big of a difference...if you're generally a hardworker, and great student with determination etc etc...then you'll do great anywhere.

but for UCLA...they do have a great program. The David Geffen school...i believe is whats it's called

The David Geffen school at UCLA is the medical school. Has nothing to do with the undergrad program.
