question: when you apply for housing, is it first come, first serve?
I dont even know if i'll go to UCI for sure until a couple weeks.

^^^ Same here.. still cant decide between UCI and UCSB

Thanks to all for your pics and input! I really appreciate it

Here's a good map for those who want to know about proximity
http://today.uci.edu/pdf/UCI_06_Map.pdf

I had one question: Is it too far if I'm in COMP SCI major and I stay in Mesa Court? Seems quite a distance in the map, but realistically? Thanks

I'm wondering the same as well.

I'm going to the CSE Experience UCI on Wed so I will see how long it takes if I remember haha

Walking to the computer science buildings from Mesa Court will take about 15-20 mins if you're not pushing it. It seems like a lot but in reality you get used to it and it's not that big of a deal after a while.

Bikes are great =]. It gets your adrenaline running by the time you get to class anyway haha.

How about the biological sciences building (or whatever its called) from MC or ME.. how far is that?

random question....do I need to do anything with the housing app if I'm living off-campus?

As a little Middle Earth resident (but I've been to Mesa a good amount), this is what I've gathered from the beginning of the school year until now

Middle Earth PROs:
- Brandywine (good sandwiches, love the pesto pasta especially)
- Pippin is better than Mesa Commons (everyone I know that's had both, even Mesa residents, thought so too)
- Closer to Social Science buildings, Engineering, ICS
- Dorms are closer (socially and location-wise)
- BSC (Brandywine Student Center) has air hockey, two pool tables, two ping pong, foosball, and internet
- Phase 3 (where I live) have nice bathrooms, pretty big rooms
- CLOSER TO ARC!!
- Closer to Albertson's

Middle Earth CONs:
- Not much of a party place
- Lots of nerds

Mesa Court PROs:
- Tackable walls.. haha
- Closer to Arts Buildings, Humanities, University Town Center
- Hotter guys
- The new dorms are super nice and spacious

Mesa Court CONs:
- Far ass walk to the ARC (but there's always the shuttle. but that stops @ a certain time)
- Far from Albertson's if you dont have a car/if you don't go to Trader Joe's for groceries
- Dorms are far apart
- Phase III middle earth are bigger than some of the older mesa rooms
- Mesa Commons sucks

Yeah I chose Mesa on my app but after living in Middle Earth, I'm really glad I live here...

i wonder why ME has all the nerds....

jas0n i just visited UCI today and saw that bikes aren't allowed on ring road, where do you ride your bike then?

Aldrich Park, they made a bike route in aldrich park

As a girl looking into the Game Design etc. Concentration, I value both big rooms/bathrooms ... and geeks. Haha, trying to pick is hard, because the geek in me screams, "It's called MIDDLE EARTH, and you're thinking of NOT picking it??" but the girly side says, "Bigger rooms, more bathroom space!"

I have no idea where my classes will be, so I can't tell which is closer! :X Also, if I can't get into the program, it's probably foreign languages or science. I'm all over the place, I think!

Anyone who's done the same concentration have any advice? :D

^ hm i guess the only advice i have for you is that if you're looking to get bigger rooms/bathrooms.. you should put Middle Earth as your first choice and hope for a phase III =)) cause our bathrooms kick ass and the doubles (which is what im in) are pretty spacious =)

HAH. i live in cascada, AKA the TECHNOLOGY hall of mesa court. it is the newest phase with the biggest rooms and cleanest bathrooms. not to mention, some of the coolest dorks around. its a good mix of comic geeks, video game fanatics (lots of those), excellent tech. support (sorta like geek squad), and all around chill people. being someone who is NOT an expert on electronics i am fortunate that i live here and have other people fix my crazy printer or install essential software on my laptop. so if you want geeks/big rooms, i would recommend cascada.

besides, we have wireless internet :)

Yeah, I went on a tour yesterday of ME and Mesa and I though ME was like jail housing and Mesa rocked.

I've been reading a lot of statements saying that ME holds more nerds than MC. I just wanted to clear up that it's more random than most people think. UCI doesn't ask the nerds to go to ME and the social people to go to MC. Most students choose it randomly when they see their housing application. For example, my dorm was one of the more loud and troublesome dorms last year, but this year it's not so much of a party dorm. I haven't seen any difference between the social environments between MC and ME (although I've heard there are some ME dorms that are pretty social).

can anyone talk about the theme halls in ME of MC? is it better to just get the general interest ones instead of the ones that have a theme?

Themes normally don't matter too much. You don't actually follow the themes but you will be living with people who also picked the theme. If you think about the type of people that would pick that theme, you can sorta predict what type of people you'll see. I live in an academic excellence hall...and there aren't really "academic" people here. General interest ones seem to have more lively people though from what I've seen this year.

yeah so im not sure if im going to UCI. is housing app stuff done after may 1?? is it first come first serve??
