Going to UCI for Mechanical Engineering with a double major in English is my dream. I want to know everything and anything I need to do to help my chances of getting admitted.
Going to UCI for Mechanical Engineering with a double major in English is my dream. I’m about to go into my junior year and so far my current UC GPA is a 4.09, I’m in the top 10% of my class. I want to know everything and anything I need to do to help my chances of getting admitted such as what sat score I should aim for, and what subject test to take. I’m currently studying for my PSATS in October as well as some minor studying for the physics subject test. @Gumbymom any advice?
Based on 2018 Statistical data the Average UC capped weighted GPA for admitted ME students was a 4.09 and average SAT was 1375. 2019 Data is not yet available and I expect the stats will be higher but this gives you some targets. Also, I would phrase your post as “Hoping to attend UCI” vs. “Going to attend UCI” since there is no guarantee that if you meet the stat targets that you will be admitted. UC admissions is more than GPA and test scores so your personal insight essays, HS course rigor and EC’s will all contribute to your chances. You also cannot declare a double major until you are admitted and are given approval. ME has a pretty rigid 4 year schedule so trying for a double major may increase your time at UCI, so make sure spending up to another year extra would be financially feasible.
Also since UCI does consider Alternate majors, select a non-Engineering major such as English as your alternate major. Just be warned that trying to change majors (especially competitive majors) can be difficult and not guaranteed.

Here is what UCI looks for in their application review.

-
Important: Character/personal qualities, Class rank

- Freshman Selection:
UCI admits into the University first and then into the major. In the case that UCI is unable to accommodate all qualified applicants in their first-choice major, those students who indicate a valid alternate major may be offered admission in that major or Undeclared.
