UCI - Paul Merage School of Business

DS has been accepted for Business Admin for both UCI and CP SLO. He would like to focus on marketing. I understand that UCI’s undergrad program is fairly new and a difficult major to transfer into. Other than the fact that Paul Merage is the “hot pockets” guy, we haven’t found much information about the undergrad program. It seems that much of the focus is on MBA students rather than undergrads. Does anyone know where we can find information on employment statistics for the undergrad program-internships and full time employment? Are class sizes large or small? Salary of graduates? etc.

@sleeplessmom1 I suggest you visit both schools. The employment statistics you are seeking won’t tell you what you are looking for, because it all depends on your son. Some Paul Merage students get marketing assistant jobs during week zero of Freshman year which they leverage into professional internships at Disney and the likes. Here is an example of a one unit class available for Merage students only https://eee.uci.edu/17s/38046/syllabus_file/MGMT90-Syllabus-Spring+2017.pdf

In addition, the career center holds classes like this one: https://eee.uci.edu/17w/86860/home/SYLLABUS+Internship+Search+Class+Winter+2017.pdf
Also, your son will be able to make appointments and work with three career counselors that work exclusively with Paul Merage undergraduate students. They help with resumes, cover letters, mock interviews and have a ton of resources for the students. They have their own private likedin group to support students. I am very impressed with the resources they offer to undergraduate students that normally would only be available to MBA students. Also, the clubs and professional fraternities provide additional resources and benefits.

Class sizes:
Intro to management 200-300 students
Accounting 65-90
Marketing 65-90
Finance 65-90
Info Sys 65-90
Organizations Management 50-90
Special Topics 20-90

The two classrooms in the gorgeous Paul Merage building that are most often used by undergraduates seat 92 or 74 students. The auditorium seats 300.

Yes, we will be visiting both schools. Thank you for all the info and links. You seem to know a lot about the business school. Do you have a child enrolled in the business school?

@sleeplessmom1 Yes, I know maybe too much about the school, lol. Probably the most underrated undergrad business school in the country, but it won’t stay this way for long. In 2015, the selectivity for transfer students was 3.1% compared with 5.2% at UCB. If you look at the MBA classes compared to undergrad classes, they are very similar. Compare MGMT 101 vs 201, 102 vs 202, 105 vs 205, 107 vs 207, 110 vs 210, 113 vs 213, etc. Take a look at the UCI Catalogue for both undergrad and MBA, see the classes that are availble and see the similarity and most importantly if your son is interested in it. Also the Cove at UCI http://innovation.uci.edu/cove/ and the applied innovation contest http://merage.uci.edu/researchandcenters/beall/BPC.aspx provide incredible opportunities. They are always looking for marketing people in these teams. The opportunities there are not something easily found at other Business schools. In short, if your son actively seeks opportunities for personal and professional growth, he can easily find them at UCI.

@uciparent - Since the classes in the business school seem much smaller (i.e. <100), are TA’s still involved or are the classes primarily taught by professors? If a student needs extra help, is there a tutoring center available or are professors available/open to helping students who may need it?

Also, what are the demographics of the undergrad business program? How diverse is it?

@sleeplessmom1 The professors (many who teach the MBA program as well) teach and are available for office hours to help. TA’s assist and are also available for office hours. If a student needs help, he can easily find it. Demographics: Asian (American and International) make the majority at UCI and at Merage as well. The core business classes are probably more diversified than CS classes, but probably less diversified than the Art School. I would guess that if I read my class roster probably 45%-60% would have Asian last names. These could be American or International.

@uciparent Thank you for all your help again. Are most of the undergraduate business courses taught in the new building? DS thought there was an older business building as well and wasn’t sure if it was still in use.

@sleeplessmom1 use this link https://www.reg.uci.edu/perl/WebSoc to get to the class schedule. Select “MGMT” from the “Department Name” drop down menu. You can check it for any term (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer) and see all the classes offered that quarter, number of enrolled students, location of class, etc. SB1 is the new building, SB2 is the older building (still very nice classrooms). Most classes are at the new building.

@uciparent Hi! I plan to attend UCI as Undeclared, and I am interested in declaring Business Admin. But I heard the major is really competitive and hard to transfer into. Is this true? Are the pre req classes hard to get?

Sleeplessmom - Would you mind sharing your stats of your son including extra curriculars

@Addicted2Jelly Very tough to get in. I was told that only about 10 students get in per year out of 2000+ that try. If you complete all pre reqs with 4.0 and have an overall 3.8+ GPA, you will be competitive.

All business classes are restricted to major only and only a few spots are left, if any, once restrictions come off. My suggestion: complete as many AP tests as possible. If you are already taking AP tests in Calculus BC, Micro Econ, Macro Econ, Stats then make sure you get 4’s and 5’s, you will be further along. If you are not taking AP econ right now, you can self study for both econ APs. Use AC/DC YouTube videos to prepare and take the AP exams (sometimes you need to find it in another high school). I know many that did that and got 4/5. Once at UCI, sign up for MGMT 30 with Chao. The online class in the summer is awesome. Take management 1 with Eppel. You need 93.5% to get A’s. So you have to work really hard. Shoot for 97% to get A+ in the accounting classes. If you need to take Math 2A/2B at UCI, you need to work hard to et an A. You will be competing against engineers that are taking the classes to boost their GPA (already took Calc BC, so they know their stuff) which hurts he curve. Sign up for Larc, and go to TA tutoring sessions and office hours.

Keep in mind that you will be competing against the smartest and brightest students to get into the major. A 3.86 GPA at UCI is top four percent of students, so have a backup plan.

@uciparent I have taken AP World History, AP Stats, AP Bio, AP US History and have gotten 4/5’s on all of them for the AP exam. In my senior year currently, I am taking AP Macro/Microecon, AP Chinese, and AP Calc AB. I plan to study hard and pass all those tests. If I do get 4/5’s on those exams, will I be exempted from taking the prereqs: Math 20A/B, and ECON 20A/B? Also, I know that I have to be in junior level standing to transfer into that major. Do you think with the amount of AP classes I have taken, will I be able to have 90+ units before I reach my junior year? Thanks for the help!!

@Addicted2Jelly

Ap World - 8 Units
AP US Hist - 8 Units
AP Bio - 8 Units (and one class in Category II)
AP Stas - 4 Units and MGMT 7 (with 4 or better).
AP Chinese 8 Units (4/5)
AP Micro 4 Units and Econ 20A (4/5)
AP Macro 4 Units and Econ 20B 4/5)
AP Calc AB 4 Units and Math 2A (4/5)

Total units: 48 (Sophomore standings)

Take:

Math 2B
MGMT 30 A
MGMT 30 B

I would do it in the summer if you can. They have pay for 8 units special. Get A’s in all classes.

With 16 units per Quarter, you can apply in week 1 to 6 of the quarter in which all pre reqs and 90 units will be completed

So for example,

Q1: 48 + 16 = 64
Q2: 64 + 16 = 80
Q3: 80 + 16 = 96

In the above case, if you complete pre reqs in Q3, you can apply week one of Spring.

If you take 3 classes in the summer and knock out the 3 pre reqs, you could apply to change major in week 1 of Winter quarter. Your GPA will be made of the three pre reqs in the summer and the 4 classes you take in the Fall. This is almost as easy as it can get to change into business admin. I know one student who had 11 APs and took summer school for pre reqs and got 4 A’s and applied to change into business administration during week one of Fall and was accepted as a Junior in Winter. So, it is doable.

Good luck on your AP tests.

@uciparent One last question if you wouldn’t mind answering, you’ve been so helpful! After I submit my SIR, would I be able to register for those summer classes even when I’m not really a student yet? Are all of those classes available online?

@Pavitra1 My sons stats : ~ 4.2 w UC GPA, 2080 SAT (old), 750 US history subject test, 5 AP english, 4 US history,
4 years of Honors/AP classes in Math, English, Science, and History. 4 years of foreign language. Extra-curriculars : multiple school leadership roles, accomplished musician - multiple instruments (Conservatory level), 300+ volunteer hours, Orchestra.

@uciparent - I noticed MGMT30 (as well as MGMT111) is also offered as an online class this Spring. How does that work, and how common is it that courses are offered as an online option only? What is the reason behind offering the class online?

@Addicted2Jelly You can register for these Summer Session classes even BEFORE submitting SIR. Here are some links: UCI summer school main page https://summer.uci.edu for online classes https://summer.uci.edu/online/ Merage only offers MGMT 1 and MGMT 30A online for lower dision. You definitely want to take 30A online with Chao. You can take Math 2B in the fall. Sign up for early spop (1 or 2) to get into classes in the Fall. As far as MGMT 30B, it isn’t offered in the Fall and will be full in Winter, so I recommend taking it in person in summer session II if you can afford it. Try to add management 1 with Eppel in Fall or Winter once restrictions are lifted. Fall Schedule will be available on May 6. https://www.reg.uci.edu/perl/WebSoc Start doing your homework on which classes you want to take. Research the professors on rate my professor, and make sure you take the easiest possible classes to get 4.0. You may consider taking 1 GE class pass/no pass if you need the units and feel it will be hard to get an A, so you can defend a 4.0. Hope this helps. Good luck.

@sleeplessmom1 MGMT 30A is normally offered online only in the summer. Chao is amazing and does so well on that, that I always wondered why it wasn’t offered online during the year, and it seems like they made it available in the spring. Most business admin major take the class with Chao in the Fall of year 2. That class has 90 students. Chao’s tests are open book open notes which is much easier than other teachers who are closed book no notes. I recommend taking Chao.

MGMT 111 is taught by Navarro who is an advisor to Donald Trump and moved to DC in January. This class does not count as an upper division elective (need 10 of those), but it counts as GE 8, which is also met by 4 years of foreign lang in high-school or AP Art History. This class is popular for obvious reasons: China, and a “celebrity” instructor.

Navarro also teaches MGMT 4A in Fall and MGMT 4B in Winter online.

Hey, Im a Transfer Student who will be attending UCI Paul Merage School of Business in Fall 2017

Major: Business Administration

CCC GPA: 3.91 (applied with 4.0)

I was hoping to get into Haas School of Business as I had all A’s, had work experience, was heavily involved on campus, and did a PR/Marketing Internship during the summer. UCI was my backup and I can’t help but be depressed about my rejection from Berkeley. I prefer UCI’s campus, location, and the academics will be less cut-throat and stressful than Berkeley, however the prestige and value of Haas’s name is unmatched.

I do realize that I must move on and utilize the opportunities that will be available to me, in terms of networking and internships, in Orange County. I am expecting to meet other motivated and innovative business students at Paul Merage considering their extremely low acceptance rate. Although, I am disheartened by the rejection from Cal, I look forward to attending UCI.
