I just wanted to see what your general impressions were. I have seen a number of dif. rankings all of which I feel are incorrect, but if you are into that thing, take a gander at this:

Are you applying for grad school at UCI? Those rankings are for grad school. No one ranks undergrad polisci. Well I am a polisci major at UCI so I could let you know my experiences so far. The intro classes are ok, but I like the upperdiv ones more because classes are smaller and the subject material is more specific, like cases and stuff. So far I like it though.

No, i Know its all Grad school - and while grad vs undergrad are very dif things, they usually are similar enough to point to a given direction. Ones school wont have a top 10 grad school and a below 50 undergrad - it just doesnt work like that.

Im glad you seem to have enjoyed it. I was at UCI for two years then transferred to NYU and now back at UCI. I wanna get out of Econ so Poli Sci seems more like my forte - i just havent talked to any prof. i like yet except Dr. Bach.

What made you leave UCI to NYU and then come back to UCI?

I've actually only taken one upperdiv polisci class so far but I really liked it. It was a very interesting topic to me and the issues/work we did were relevant and up to date, and it was smaller, and you could tell that the professor cared about the students.

Yea im back - LONG ASS STORY - too make it short - the counselors at NYU told me I was nuts paying the money I was there and that I should rush back to the UCs because 1. theyre cheaper, 2. he felt the top four (la, sd, i, and berk) were better in Poli Sci, 3. they wanted me to stay for 3 years cuz of credit transfer issues. It just made NO SENSE to stay. I was there for 10 days then came home with all of my money. I guess ill just have to wait until grad school to get out of here.

wow. it was nice of those nyu counselors to be honest like that.

i heard the polisci major reqs are a little more lax than some of the other majors at uci (5 lower div, 6 upper div, and social science school reqs). sounds good to me.

haha thanks guys - its good to be back in some ways. Im going to be starting an NGO and a club when school starts. Check back here for updates - I want to get UCI put on the map for something other than Bio.

Wow, that's weird how the counselors were honest like that. That's rare. Well, you are really lucky that you were guided to the right decision :). I really hope you succeed in your endeavors to change the UCI rep.

I had some great profs and good courses in Upper Division Poli Sci. After a few though, it might seem to be repetitive.

If you enjoy Poli Sci, the best experience (hands down) from any course, etc is going to the UCDC program. And the more students from UCI that particpiate, the more it helps the UCI rep and Poli Sci indirectly.

Sorry about NYU and hope you can try to enjoy UCI in the meantime. I am sure you will do well and you can take the time to learn about grad programs and go exactly where you want to go after you graduate.

Thanks Demo, I appreciate the kind words of encouragement. And yes, I will enjoy UCI - it really is a great school no matter what others think or say. I just read that UCI has more top 10 PHD programs than I believe it was Harvard. While that doesnt mean its a better school, it does say something about UC Irvine.

I really hope people begin to open their eyes and see that this school is really racing up the ladder. SB and D are moving too but not nearly as quickly as UCI is. I truly believe that the next two decades will bring some unprecedented success to Irvine. I hope to meet some of you this coming year - ill organize some events so that we can make a mark on this place.

What kind of NGO/club are you planning on starting? If it's gunna put UCI "on the map" for something else it would prolly have to be a huge deal.

Its not going to be HUGE HUGE, obviously. Youll see when I get it going so Im not going to release any details as of yet (mainly because details are sparse as of yet), but it will deal with another NGO located in Berlin/Skopje run by a guy I met at my brief time at NYU. Ill make sure to keep you guys posted.

Just remember that it wont be hugely original nor will it be revolutionary, but it will make a difference (I hope) and start something at UCI that will make it unique as a UC and perhaps as a university in America.
