ucsb has a better engineering school to begin with...

i agree.. uci is trying to "put" itself into the elite by rejecting more than qualified students

Datanator totally deserved it though...33 on the ACT...holy that's a 2190 (much much higher than UCI and UCSD)
And a 3.6 w isn't bad @ an uber hard school either
UCI doesn't know who it's losing.
Basically this just goes to show that whatever school you go to... No matter how efFin competitive it is, UCs don't care $hit... Best solution we should all go to basically the easiest school in our neighborhood, for Datanator and I that's Woodbridge
Effff school's blue ribbon winning crap... Its screwing ppl over
End rant

i was waitlisted for uci
but was accepted to nyu

weird

Waitlist?
What is this CalTech?

clickforrm, further proof that UCI is retarded, for lack of a better word.

DunninLA, a lower GPA does not necessarily mean laziness. It could mean that you went to a difficult school or perhaps you had the integrity to not cheat. At my school, the top 50 ranks basically cheat off of each other because they all take the same classes. I had the option to sign up for honors math classes and follow suit, but I chose to struggle in college prep instead. That brought down my GPA, but at least I know I didn't compromise my integrity for a grade.
I think grades are faulty indicators of intelligence and ability, seeing as schools range in difficulty, some inflate grades, some have huge cheating issues (mine).
But in my case, like many others, I have absolutely no problem being rejected from UCI. I'm editor of the school newspaper, VP of our award-winning choir program, an aspiring writer and a political enthusiast. If they wanted someone that got an A in calculus instead, it's their loss.

Rejected.

3.8 UC GPA
4.0 Weighted GPA
2120 SAT I
750 World History
710 Literature

Political Science major.

@gwu, what you just said is a very big exaggeration. Top 50 ranks cheat? Riiiight.
You are basically implying that in order to achieve good grades, you need to cheat. Then why are you going to college? It's going to be even more difficult.

Also, Calculus isn't up to the difficulty level that you need to resort to cheating. Grades are faulty indicators, though. Why? Because many classes in school involve busywork. Busywork has almost no learning value in my opinion and many like me, find doing it a waste of time. Though I started doing the busywork to pull up my gpa =/,

shiomi, not all of them, certainly, but a great majority. Mea culpa, I used absolutes. However, it is at the point that, starting next year, AP teachers are screening who signs up and limiting students to 3 AP classes. It's a serious problem at my school.

Maybe calc isn't difficult for you, but it is difficult for me. I'm not good at math. Basically all other subjects I'm alright in, but mathematics are not my forte. It doesn't make me stupid.
I didn't take it this year, and earned a 4.5 honestly.

Friend had a 4.0 weighted. 2240 SAT score. had a 760 in math IIc, and an 800 in bio. solid extracurriculars, and strong essays.

rejected today. =/

they probably thought you guys wouldnt have gone if you were accepted...
which is probably true..
right?

so just move on.

Do account the fact that UC Irvine along with UC San Diego was most affected by the recent admission changes by UC Regents in which both must cut down freshmen enrollment, the people who will attend as students (not only accepted), by 12%. This is totally out of the control of both admissions offices. Not to mention UCI had even more applications than last year and probably its record.

And no, UC Irvine does not have "Tuft's Syndrome" since it is aware that about only 30% of the students who are accepted will attend UCI, and this number has been consistent for some years and therefore accept a lot more than it can admit...which has caused some trouble within the past few years (overenrollment).

As someone pointed out, GPA is the most important factor into UC admissions. While all other stats may look superb, having a mediocre GPA (below or near 3.8 or 3.9 based on last year's average) is going to become an Archillies heal.

However, I will say "*** waitlist LOLreallyLOL?" on that :)

UCSB is alright.

3.9 weighted, 3.55 unweighted (horrible I know) and 2040 SAT

rejected

I really thought I was gonna get in and UCI is probably my only option for college other than CC because I don't have the money to live away from home.

theshonen8899...sorry that you didn't get into UCI. Maybe this is an opportunity for you. Your stats show that you are a good student. Go to CC, save a TON of money and I bet you can transfer anywhere you want (UCI or wherever!). Just make sure you check out the schools you want to transfer to and find out exactly what you need.

This may be a blessing in disguise.

OP -- 3.6 weighted is appropriate to Riverside and UCSC... not UCI. I'm sorry you think grades are not important, because you just found out that to adcoms, it is paramount. And I don't think adcoms have any way of knowing who cheated and who didn't... it sucks that your choice to remain honest has possibly hurt your gpa... but that is a discussion for another thread.

4.1 weighted, 3.5 unweighted
1610 sat (i know low)
got into ucSD not uci
i'm also elc 4%
undecided major
maybe i can sue them for breach of contract

I agree indiowho.

I've seen the rejection stats, and most of them are people who have SAT scores of 1800 plus and high GPAs of 4.0s

And since UCI has always been a back up for UCSD and UCLA, the admission office probably assumed that the people who are highly qualified were probably going to go those schools.

UCI had to limit the students they admitted because of budget cuts, and probably accepted the ones who were more likely to go.

And don't assume just because you're over the average stats of the school that you're in. It only improves your chance but doesn't guarantee anything.

hmmmm well...

i'm out of state
3.8 gpa
1780 sats
taken as many ap classes possible if that helps any

and yeah i got accepted though

but i got into undecided undeclared

maybe uci is just looking for diversity, or giving the ones who have no chance into ucla or ucb a chance at uci. There's plenty of reasons why they did what they did. I honestly didn't believe that I would get in but i got accepted

lolucifailz

I was rejected as well, kind of a shocker to me and my classmates. UCI was my top choice too. Wasn't like I was going to go to UCSD or anything - they rejected me too! Majored in Computer Science with Undeclared secondary.
4.2 GPA
1880 SAT
2 AP tests - One 4 and one 5
SATII: 740 U.S. History and 600 English (yeah, kinda weak)

I write good essays too; I've always been complimented on them by teachers. Maybe it was my lack of extra-curriculars? I was pretty confident I'd get in, but it's a good thing I didn't get too cocky and applied for other schools as well. Doesn't really matter now, I think I'll be happy as a Gaucho at UCSB.
