UCI students. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am transfering from SMC (Santa Monica) to your school. I love WLA and do not want to leave (stupid UCLA taking away my admission!). OMG!!! Irvine is alot further than I first expected! (sob), i'm never gonna see my la friends again. Do any of u commute to UCI? If yes, where do you live and how long does it take u? I want to stay as close to LA as possible, but i know i might commit suicide from the stress and road rage the 405 is going to cause me. HELP!!!

Hahaha - hey man, welcome to my life. I have commuted to UCI for 2 years now from Chino. Now, normally it will take around 45 minutes to get to school from my house without traffic. I take the 91 freeway (many people consider this equally as horrific at the 405) everyday to and from (i also have to take the 55 to the 405 to jamboree). It usually takes me about 50 minutes to an hour and a half to go one way. Ya, it sucks and it does make you wanna kill someone, but if you have a lot of good music to listen to then you should be ok. My best advice is to just stay at school until 7 or later and then go home - its the best way to get the most of your day on campus and miss traffic. Oh, and I drive a manual transmission honda civic with power NOTHING - if I can do it - you can too.

Chino!!! Christ that is far (from wla). Hey outo, seems like u know UCI pretty well. do u think living in Irvine would be that bad? My friend graduated from there and tells me it sucks his balls, but he's a city boy. How much is rent? And are there good clubs/frats? I am a EC guy. 100 hrs. community service, secretary and president of honors society (250+ members)?

Well, based on my friend's perspective they think living in Irvine is fun. Everyone has this idea that once college beings, all you do is party and you need a huge city to go do that at - its just not true. For the most part, you will be working your ass off in class during the weekdays and during those nights you will be either studying or working out (or clubs, greek meetings, greek dances, greek parties, or even massive Starcraft LAN parties). On the weekends, you have the choice of 5 beaches to surf at not to mention a selection of 3 separate malls and a number of clubs in South OC and up the coastline (on PCH).

Rent as far as I recall is $400 per person roughly while sharing a room with someone. It can range anywhere from $350 - $1000 depending on how many people are in your room and in the house all together.

As for ECs - there are a ton of clubs and a TON of Greek stuff - if you cant find your niche just create your own club and im sure tons of people will follow.

Its true there is a lot of construction, but by next year there will be a Starbucks in the middle of campus and a huge, brand new Student Center.

Im leaving for NYU this year as a transfer student, but im only leaving because my major isnt offered at UCI (International Relations - the Intl Studies at UCI isnt what I want in terms of structure and classes). Otherwise, if they had that major, I would stay - I thought the campus was beautiful and fun. There was always something to do at the beach - I say you come down during these last few weeks of school and catch a glimpse of a regular school day - youll see its not so boring - its just not overly active.

I am very optimistic about UCI, but my housing is what is the main issue right now. Sucks, cuz when I got my admission to UCLA, i had everything planned and was going to move into a 2bedroom w/ my friend, but now i dont know anyone who goes to UCI or anyone that lives close to there. And i'm not going to bother to look on craig's list; there are alot of wierdos that post on there. That SC remark was so random, but what's so funny is I play that game often and am pretty good at it (i think it is one of the most competitive games u can play on the comp). LMAO. NYU huh? My current roommate is going there (stern). That is a huge change. $1,000 for a studio???? Godamn that's almost the same price a s Wla.

Well the roommate thing might be an issue, but im sure youll find someone. Just post on the anteater forum (look it up on google).

I too was accepted to UCLA this coming year but I decided to bail on it - too close to home for me.

As for SC, ya, its nuts. Tons of kids play that stuff in the dorms - i swear, they have/had level wars (1st floor v 2nd floor v 3rd floor) of a dorm. Everyone was in on it. Its even better when youre drunk

What year are u transferring (i.e. junior/senior). Cuz i'm wondering if i can transfer to ucla after 1 quarter at uci (LOL, its just cuz i know alot of people going there). And if so, do u think i have a good shot considering they admitted me before (the only reason y they withdrew my admission was because my major gpa might be below 3.0 which is the minimum). How was your dorm experience. Thinking about living with a stranger (Campus village) makes it sound unappealing. i'm 23 yrs old too, making me probably alot older than the other students (sophmore, juniors, seniors).

Im a second year and ill be transferring into NYU as a Junior. If you recall, I never dormed - I always commuted, but I stayed at UCI a lot with friends so I got a good experience. I dont think you have a chance at all transferring after one quarter - you will need to either make a deal with UCLA about you transferring back there or you will have to wait at least one year.

Thx for all the help. Truely appreciated. the anteater forum is the most important website i could have gotten at this stage. Although there are a small number of people that scare the hell out of me. They have myspace addresses which they shouldn't have linked to their posts. Who the hell would want to live w/them??? LMAO.

Ya some people are nuts, but there is always someone out there who is normal and desperately needs roommate - normally transfers. Just keep looking - im confident youll find someone.

what do u think about Vista del Campo? I am very interested in applying there but looking for others who are interested living there.

Vista is awesome - I applied to get in but my group was waitlisted - the whole place is really nice but parking there sucks - there are so few spots.

parking's getting better I heard from some of my friends. Supposedly, it's improved quite a bit from last year.

Thats good to hear. Hope they still have rooms.

McChowder, are you considering Campus Village or Arroyo Vista? They're the cheapest options available for transfers. I'll be a transfer student going to CV this upcoming school year and will more than likely look into Vista Del Campo the year thereafter.

You probably won't be getting a place at Vista Del Campo for this upcoming year. From what I hear waitlisting is crazy; every year students literally have to 'camp' out early to sign up. However because you are a transfer student you should be getting a guaranteed spot at either AV or CV for one year.

--But yeah, as suggested check out AnteaterForum; there's probably a few VDC folks who are looking to sublease their room, as well as other opportunities.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened with UCLA. What exactly went wrong? Is there any way you could make up for it, say take more classes during the summer to bump your GPA up for admission by the time you transfer?

UCLA considers junior transfer students as students within the range of a minimum 90 to a maximum 120-130 quarter units (can't remember the exact number). This was something I was going to consider but for now I've decided on sticking with UCI. I've asked plenty of questions regarding this...And it seems that because of UC reciprocity of courses, all of the courses will transfer HOWEVER I heard that upper division courses do not. So if you plan accordingly you could apply to transfer again for 'junior' admission, but actually almost be a senior.
