UCI Summer Multicultural Leadership Institute?

Umm...I received this e-mail today and although it sounds like a great opportunity, I just want to know if anyone else received this and/or knows more about it?

It says I'd still have to apply, so I'm not getting my hopes up or anything...But I'd like to know the number of people I'm actually having to 'compete' with to get in.

I'll be calling for more info anyway but just thought I should ask here too. ;p

Dear UC Irvine Student,

Welcome to the University of California, Irvine! I am sure that with
all the planning and preparation you have already done, your academic
experience at UCI will be not only academically rewarding but
enjoyable as well.

This summer we are launching for the first time a Multicultural
Leadership Institute for first year students. The purpose of the UC
Irvine Summer Multicultural Leadership Institute is to provide
personalized training for first year students on issues of diversity,
conflict management, and social justice. Students who are selected
for the program will also experience an initial orientation to UCI
and receive training on important campus life issues at UCI. As a new
student to UCI this fall, you are eligible to apply for this very
special and unique opportunity. I would urge you to seriously
consider this opportunity. You will not only meet 39 other new
students during the weekend program but, you will have a head-start
on your academic career by meeting key faculty and staff who will be
teaching the various workshops designed just for this program. It is
hoped that the forty students who are selected to attend the
Institute will prove to be ambassadors for our campus in the years to
come.

All students selected to participate in this very unique program will
receive a scholarship to cover the cost of all workshops, residence
hall accommodations, and meals. The application deadline is
Thursday, June 22, 2006.

So don't hesitate, apply now! An application is attached to this
email. Just fill it out, download it and mail it to the address
on the application. If you have any questions, please contact my office at
949-824-5181.

What's the name of the person who sent the letter?

Oh, it was:

Sally Peterson
Assistant Vice Chancellor, Dean of Students

I got the same message, but I don't know if it's worth doing. I'm not sure if I want to undergo some leadership program since I haven't had any leadership experience.

If you haven't had any leadership experience, you might as well get some now! It'll be hard for you to get a job later on without it.

I know Sally well. She's a very nice woman and you'll learn a lot from her staff. She's one of the people on campus you'll want to get to know if you want to make an impact on campus later on in college.

That program sounds very interesting and if it isn't a huge time commitment, I'd strongly urge students to apply as well. I know the leadership conference by DOS is always a good one and this one sounds like it's got some good content to it.

"It says I'd still have to apply, so I'm not getting my hopes up or anything...But I'd like to know the number of people I'm actually having to 'compete' with to get in."

I'm wondering that myself. I received the email and plan to apply to the program.

Do only a certain number of people receive this email, or do all students? Any information on this matter is appreciated.

This is really weird guys. I sent in my SIR stating that I am not going to attend UCI (I still have the confirmation email), and today I get this email.

WHAT THE HECK!?!

ignore it?

atracy6677, I called Sally yesterday and she told me that every student who is considered first year (freshman and transfers) are eligible to apply for the MLI. After finding this out I'm very disappointed and I doubt that I'll make it in...But it doesn't hurt to try, does it? I could really use the experience.

alicantekid, you're precisely right about her. She was incredibly nice and supportive to me.

anyone else applying?

I submitted my app already...Just wondering if anyone else here has?

I submitted an app....when do we hear back?

I'm not sure, but when I spoke with Sally Peterson she told me that they would review the apps ASAP. They know that people have plans during the summer and want to make the process as convenient as possible. However it's been a week already so I'm not sure how fast they're working on it.

Just found out that I made the Summer Multicultural Leadership Institute

Post if you did!

Hey i was wondering how you foudn out?

you should've recieved an e-mail yesterday saying "Congratulations!" if you got in

I got in, anyone else going to the conference? and do we get free room and board for a year? or just the weekend?

Hye i jsut found i got in too. hahaha cool i'll see you guys there!

I made it too! I'll see you guys there!
