Uci Tier 3 ***??

uhh i read this in another topic
"But who would willingly go to a tier 3/commuter school?"

I thought UCI was a Tier 2 UC...?

Come on you guys act like UCI is crappy, its ranked pretty high overall y u guys gotta hate???

UCI is a good school but it is pretty easy to get in..

Because a lot of transfers are able to go to tier 1 UCs like UCB or UCLA. Therefore, IMO, UCI is not popular with transfers. But overall UCI is a great school and most definately a tier 2 UC or even better.

UCI is definitely prestigious. It ranks above the calstates and is still a top 50 public university. Of course, the majority of people are only familiar with brandname schools so LA and Berkeley is all that they know.
I think if UCI played a little "hard to get" we'd all be clawing to get in.

Is UCI a tier three school? Not by any since of the word. Its ranked by Newsweek as 44th in the nation overall not just public school USNews.com: America's Best Colleges 2008: National Universities: Top Schools. It is a pretty difficult school to get into out of high school just it is pretty easy to transfer. It might be a commuter campus but none the less is still a top notch research university. So if some one belittles UCI and says the it is a crappy tier 3 school they are an ignorant idiot.

Elitist snobbery doesn't exist solely in Ivy Leaguer's.

Personally, I would ignore what most people write and go by feel and experience the campus yourself. But hey, it's a lot easier to simply look at a list of schools and determine your choice by which has the lowest number(USNWR)...

Unless you count UCSD as the only school being the "3rd tier", then no, UCI is not considered to be the 3rd tier, but the 2nd.

According to US News week UCI is a Tier 1 school not a tier 2 school little on a tier 3 school. A Tier 1 school according to US News is a university that is ranked in the top 50% of universities in the category that it is in. UCI is in the national University category with Harvard, MIT, CAL, UCLA, etc. US news week has a list of 124 national universities that are all tier 1 schools and UCI is ranked 44 in that list. So really UCI is in the Tier 1 schools of the tier 1 schools as it is ranked better than over 50% of the tier one schools.

Kinda off topic, but what is the difference of Tier 1 and Tier 2?

I had originally thought the first 50 in the US News list is Tier one and the next 50 is tier two and so on. If thedude44 is correct, than all 124 n. unis are tier one schools??

I go to UCI so I can speak from personal experience. UCI probably gets a bad name since a majority of the people are local so the campus is empty during weekends and many others commute. When I dormed 12/16 people in my suite go home during the weekends. Seems like a lot of CCC students who have over a 3.5 think they're really good and would excel in B or LA, but I'll be willing to bet you wont be getting over a 3.5 your first quarter. I never went to a CCC, but from my observations of others who have and did well while they were there, they struggled to even get a 3.0 after they transferred, especially if you're a science major.

The bioengineering department competes with Stanford and Harvard every year for grants and most of the time UCI gets more money than one or even both of them. I know this bc i worked in one of their research labs.

I'm the one that made that comment in the OP, and I stand by it. Quite a few of my friends got into UCI with 3.0 GPA straight out of High School, so make of that what you will...

Among the other UC's, it is ranked lower than the following:
UCLA
UCB
UCD
UCSD

On Par with:
UCSB

And Better than:
UCSC
UCR

While it's quite an accomplishment to even get accepted by a UC, a person should have a compelling reason to even want to go to a UC that ranks along with a notorious party school, and two other UC's that are easy to get into...

i think UCD,UCI,UCSB are tied but UCD is going up recently!

Ucd= Ucsd??????????????????????/

No Kidding?????????????????????

ok, i guess uci just accepts a broader range of students bc i went in w/ a 3.7 2000 SAt from high school.

Here's the situation:

When most people here and students from UC refer "tier", they mean in the context of other UC campuses, not nationwide. Nationally, UCI, along with 5-6 other campuses from the system, are in tier 1. However, UCI is considered to be tier 2 among UC campuses. It's a tier within a tier.

It's too early too call that UCD "is going up" just because it was the top UC tier 2 school for this year. Last year, it was UCI. I won't be surprised if next year's top tier 2 will be UCSB or even UCI again.

However, the big picture is that we shouldn't nit pick one university to another just because there's a +/- 5 or less rank difference. Are we to say that Princeton is the best university, better than Harvard and Yale, simply because it ranked better on a magazine?

Therefore Anchor, don't try to base your claims too much on a small difference in rankings. Also, there's another UC campus that was established few years ago called UC Merced, give it some recognition it needs :D

Ha, BirdKiller makes a pretty valid point. What amazes me is that people could be influenced by what a small group of people think.

I personally don't consider UCI to be that great of a school, but that's just me. Some agree, some don't. In reality, most will just end up going where ever the heck they feel like going.

As far as Merced is concerned: I'll consider it when/if the campus is ever completed. At moment it's nothing more than a glorified cal state out in the middle of nowhere. :D

UCSC

While it's quite an accomplishment to even get accepted by a UC, a person should have a compelling reason to even want to go to a UC that ranks along with a notorious party school, and two other UC's that are easy to get into...

PLX PUT DOWN UR CRACC PIPE

There's no way UCD is better than UCI and UCSD Is slightly bettar

succ some more UCLA dicc y dont u

^haha i completely agree. most of the CCC people come off to be snobbish if you ask me.

Yeah I mean it's cool that there are this many people on this board that are probably going to end up at LA and Berk, but it seems like whenever a "lesser" UC is brought up everyone just thinks it's wasted discussion time and tries to knock on the school. The fact is, besides UCR, UCSC, and UCM, every UC is in the top 50 on U.S. News and that has to mean something. Even UCSC is rated on par with CU Boulder which is respected nation wide and Riverside is the same rating as U of Arizona. We really are spoiled to have this opportunity to go to such great schools and to be able to have top 50 schools as safeties. I think more people just need to take a step back and realize how great of a situation we are all in, and how a majority of the world doesn't even go to college.
Oh and check out number 10 on the new snoop dogg CD if you're into rap. It's called "sets up" featuring Pharrell. The beat is ridiculous.

USNews.com: America's Best Colleges 2008: National Universities: Top Schools

According to that, UCD IS ranked higher than UCI (If only slightly). So yeah, keep thinking that your Tier 3 commuter school is better than the ONLY UC that provides the "College Town" experience, and staff that actively participates on these boards...

Hell, why not ask Guyy? He's currently looking to transfer FROM UCI right?

And yeah, UCLA can go suck a dicc...

Translation for the retarded:
PlZ To BE LOokin' aT ThE OP, yA KnOW's bRa, HeCk yOu made ThE POsT. UCI iS on SamE leVel as UCSB.
