UCI Transfer 2013 Decisions

Guys I have a serious question to ask… So lately I’ve been hearing unpleasant things about the UCI campus… about it being negatively harsh on blacks and latinos as they are the minority… anybody have any insight on that?

I mean I knew the school was mostly Asian and I am completely Ok with that. I was born in England, so I know how it is to be in a school with a majority different from you… I also lived in Africa for a few years, so i know what it is to be the majority in a school( went to a private school, we had bunch of american and european army kids there too) and I understand there will always be isolation with the minority group… but is it over the top.? about 895 of the asians i’ve met are nice, at least to me,so this stuff baffles me.

I’m a chill dude so I don’t need stress of getting into altercations over racism etc… its unneeded. anybody know if its actually like that, or a case of a a one off situation happening and the black pop at UCI going ott?

Honestly I like the school, came highly recommended, but I’d rather avoid a hostile situation and go to Davis than put myself in such a pickle…
any info, advice, whatever you got…will be appreciated. thanks all.

@kingblue, I’ve never heard anyone say that about UCI before, that’s odd, I highly doubt it’s true, I have plenty of friends that go to UCI and they’re nothing like that. Where did you hear this from? To be honest, I would say that it’s probably a lie, 99% positive, I mean there are bound to be people like that at every school, but as long as you are friendly and a good person, it doesn’t matter what your skin color is to the majority I would guess.

@marquisshowchoir… that was my thinking too… I’ve never heard of that before… ever till this week… something about a blackface incident and the hearing about overt racism left and right… wondering why I never heard of it before…very odd

I really hope there’s not a culture of intolerance there. My daughter is still pending, but I would be heartbroken to send her so far from home and have to deal with that. Her being mixed is a double-edged sword. She doesn’t face much outright racism, but a lot of people make comments about groups, not knowing she’s black or Mexican.

There are knuckleheads everywhere - hopefully it’s just a couple of ignorant people doing it, and just a couple more ignorant people who don’t understand what’s wrong.

ACCEPTED

GPA: 3.36
Major: Biology
Current College: Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
TAG?: No
IGETC?: No

Just got my acceptance this morning.

@kingblue, I think it’s about this video, I just looked it up.

[UC Irvine fraternity being investigated over ‘racist’ video - latimes.com](UC Irvine fraternity being investigated over 'racist' video)

It’s just about some dumb frat kids who decided to make a youtube video of Suit & Tie and one of them put like black paint on his face to do the part of Jay-Z in the music video. I mean, it’s unacceptable, but I highly doubt they meant to be disrespectful or make a certain gesture about black people. To be honest, I doubt this is the case for the majority of students, although at the end of article, the BSU co-chairwoman of UCI said that this isn’t the first instance of racism, pretty sure it’s a small majority.

I’ll do some more investigating for you, probably later this week, I have finals this upcoming week so yeah. By the way, I’m Asian so yeah… and I went to a primarily Asian high school, but everyone gets along with everyone, Snoop Dogg’s son actually goes to my high school right now, but yeah I know a lot of people from my high school that go to UCI and I couldn’t imagine any of them being like that…

Before (like half an hour ago) it said something like ‘being evaluated.’ Now it says “no application record available” and we’re still logged in.

I checked message center, and no change.

Is this a bad sign? =/

@kingblue, racism will exist everywhere. Fortunately, it’s not an issue at UCI. During my years at UCI, I’ve seen people from all race interacting with each other. Even the professors that I had treated every student the same. The stories you hear are blown out of proportion and is not something you should base your future decision on. I will say this though, upper division students are a lot more mature and focused. It’s the freshmen/frat boys that are knuckleheads.

re: ZotPortal change

nevermind - it’s back to “being evaluated”

ugh!!

Any engineering major students with TAG but didn’t get the decision yet? please let me know im stressing out now!!!

Do u guys see the financial aid award and the amount? I thought it would update once u r in but I’m not seeing anything. Update it shortly or along that line. Is there anyone who can actually see the decline/accept award?

Someone make a facebook page! mine is really bad, Clamfest i cant wait for you to get in so we can start our no study game haha

@kingblue Oh you were born in England? Neat! Please tell me you’re not a Manchester United fan ahahah…and are you still waiting to get in?
@Ricky Ugh I know! I’m still waiting, but at least now I will know for sure by Tuesday lol. So I can’t officially join the party until then haha.

@kingblue I have never heard that about UCI and I’ve been in irvine for many years. I’ve taken two classes there and no one treated me differently. I’m Hispanic by the way. Although they are very aggressive when it comes to school it’s gets cut throat but not because of race. I think (sorry to generalize) Asians will be more receptive to your company if they feel like you can help them in some way. I’m basing this off the fact that I briefly attended University HS the HS that’s directly across the street from UCI and the environment is very similar.

alright well once you get in make that group haha

Ricky, you should create it. You seem like the best candiadate to do it.

You’ve been a cc member for a long time and you are an active poster.

I got accepted into uci a couple of days ago and I’m probably gonna sir here. Anyone from Sacramento intending to go to uci this fall? Maybe we can work out some living arrangements. And I’m a computer game science major.

Gnoob88 I’m from sac

@ineeddadegree… yeah I’ve spoken to some of my friends who go there and they said its all blown out of proportion. ive never heard that claim too, so it was strange to me… but thanks for clarifying.

@clamfest yes I was born in England. and no! I was born in west london so I’m a Chelsea fan through and through. My dad and older brother are manchester fans though. My dad schooled in manchester so i understand. lol
