UCI transfer student orientation?

Orientation 2009

I was looking for transfer orientation dates, but the only thing I found for transfer students was the "Transfer Success" program, which is not mandatory. SPOP seems like for freshmen students.

My main concern is the class registration process. If there's no mandatory orientation program for transfer students, will class registration be available as soon as my billing system account is ready? Classes are already getting full.

I don't know how this works.

i got an email titled UCI mandatory advising. in it was attached a welcome letter, and reservation forms.

I would like to welcome each of you to UCI and the School of Social Sciences. In order to prepare you for the Fall Quarter, it is important that you register for MANDATORY Summer Academic Advising. Information regarding these sessions is in the mail to you however I wanted to pass along the information to you via email as well.

It’s important that you get a head-start on course selection and registration. You may notice that there is a Hold on your records that has been placed. It’s been placed for all incoming transfer students and freshmen students and will be released when the student has completed advising. Please do not be alarmed by it.

At the advising sessions, you will be advised on your individual requirements, major/departmental requirements, School requirements, various policies/procedures and will enroll into your Fall 2009 courses.

Please take time to review the below information for your respective majors. You need only to select ONE day/time for your major.

Thank you. I guess I’ll receive one in email soon too.

I didn’t get an email yet, i just received a phone call. Im a civil engineer major though so it may be different from the social sciences. She even showed me that I had a hold until I saw her. I guess you have to physically be there and see them take the hold off of your name. You may want to do it as early as possible since it seems classes may fill up pretty fast. It seems that you can start registering for classes about 5 days after your hold is taken off. I’m sure social sciences is the same. Goodluck!! hope that helped a little too even though im in a different college.

for the school of physical sciences you register for classes that same day. Im doing it on the 26th

yeah i just finished registering my classes. It’s pretty exciting but so much different than being at a CC not sure if you guys have discussion classes after the lecture but all we had was just the class so now I have to figure out how to get the discussions to fit around with the actual classes. It’s exciting though.

j.irvin020, so you just went to the summer academic advising event right?

Would you like to share with us how was the event?

Also, do you plan to take Summer Session II classes?

Well it wasn’t really an event. Originally I just got a call from the Engineering school telling me that I can’t pick classes until i meet with my academic counselor and that they were calling to set up and appointment and such. So i made it about a week later. It was also my first time visiting Irvine so it was a good experience for me since i left impressed of the school. But all you do is meet your academic counselor they look over ur unofficial transcripts see what you’ve taken. Then they just outline all the courses for you to take for each quarter since at UCI certain classes are only given for quarters its not like CC where you can take whatever whenever. So they make sure they outline pretty well for you. It was about an hour and a half for me but they take off the hold on your name, and for me i was able to register for classes a week after they took off the hold.

I was a little bit confusing about the academic advising thing because it takes 3 hours

So besides meeting with the counselor, do they show us anything else? (presentation, campus tour, school professor… etc.)

a week after the hold? thats lame.

my email for the school physical sciences had this in it :

During the group session, a counselor will discuss major requirements, graduation requirements, research opportunities, honors opportunities, the Schedule of Classes, how to enroll in classes and much more. During your individual appointment, your counselor will discuss how your classes transfer to UCI and what classes you have left to take. You will be able to enroll in classes during your individual appointment.

so i take it i get to register for classes then and there right?

Im a math major who has completed everything:

IGETC, lower math requirements, and stuff but am only missing the physics sequence and I am hoping it does not fill up.

From the looks of it, seems each department is different, because my counselor never went over with me about honors and research opportunities. She did mention to me though sometime in July she’s going to send a email to all her students to do a conference orientation. Wish it was the real deal in person. But for your question Art is Melodic they just outline the classes you have to take for the next 2-3 years or even less that you’ll spend at irvine. They have to take the hold off your record which is the primary reason why they want us to meet with our academic counselor. Once they take the hold off it takes a few days to actually register in my case it took a week. They will just show you where to go and how to register and what you need to make sure you gotta do to keep the class or drop it.

ahh thats kinda lame. I was hoping we would be able to register right then and right there.
