I plan on applying to UCI and UCLA’s Nursing schools and both have a 2% admittance rate which means they are highly selective. I am also interested in computer science, so if I choose CS as an alternate major will that affect my admission chances? They are two completely different majors, so I’m not sure what to do!
If anyone is able to give me advice or have had somewhat of the same experience, please help me out. I’m currently a senior in high school!
UCI admits into the University first and then into the major. In the case that UCI is unable to accommodate all qualified applicants in their first-choice major, those students who indicate a valid alternate major may be offered admission in that major or Undeclared.
Valid alternate major is the key since CS is also highly competitive, so there is a high chance you would be accepted Undeclared instead of into CS.
For UCLA:
Q: IF I AM NOT ADMITTED UNDER MY FIRST CHOICE MAJOR, WILL UCLA REVIEW ME FOR MY ALTERNATE MAJOR?
A: Within the College of Letters and Science, the major an applicant chooses is not a factor in the review process at the freshman level. Otherwise, we guarantee review of first-choice majors only.
UCLA does not normally consider the alternate choices of applicants who applied to majors in the other schools (Engineering, Arts, Nursing).
So for UCLA, CS will not be considered if you select it as an alternate major.
