I’m thinking of majoring in biology or biochemistry and evtually going to medical school…so which of these 3 UCs has the best premed programs and/or research opportunities?

premed: UC Davis

research: UC Davis

uc davis medical is good, also engineering, biology, and chemistry

hope that helps

^^What? I heard Davis is good only for the natural sciences.

Out of the three you have listed, x, I would say UCSB is the best for going into pre-med because they have the best science department as well as great research opportunities. I would say at least moreso than davis.

Also the majority, can't exactly remember, of the 5 nobel laureates at SB are in the science field, so if you ever get to do research under one of them that can never look bad.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, as in major(biochem) and choosing between those colleges, so take whatever I said any way you want...

dont worry they are all good UCI is pretty good too

bump, anyone else?

Also I heard UCSB is known as the party school...jsut how bad is the party scene at UCSB? because I'm not much of a party guy

hxc party school
good looking people is always a plus though

my friend is on spring break from ucsb he said like 1 out of 3 girls have stds and the parties are awesome, but its still a good school.

i heard UCI is better at premed out of the three you listed.

UCI has a lot of research oppurtunities. i would pick uci over ucsb. i dont know about davis.

bump.............

I kinda leaning towards UCI now, what do you guys think?

Man. I was gonna go to UCSB. Now I'm beginning to learn toward Irvine too.

I can't speak for Davis or SB, but UC Irvine has a ton of research opportunities for undergraduates. I'm talking about REAL research, not just being some professor's errand boy and washing test tubes. Students do their own research, can apply for their own grants, present at conferences and symposiums, and get published. Not only can a student do research on the campus, but also at the medical school across the street. Also, the way they teach the bio curriculum is conducive for success on the MCAT. It has been unanimous among my bio major friends who went to med school that the UCI curriculum prepared them well for the first year of med school and made the transition easier than some of their other classmates that went to other schools.

Ehhh......I dunno.....The decision is tough but for me it's not including Irvine. It's just such a boring place with just waaaaaayyyy too many weird asians(don't worry, I'm asian). The city is just a bland, boring, commuter city, with no real college like feel(from my impressions after spending time there).

I know academics is important, but I want the whole college experience, and Irvine just won't give it to me. (C'mon, anteaters?)

So for me it's between SB and Davis....I think I'm going to visit both...Davis-great college town, great student body, everyone lives on campus, only football team apart from berk and la.....SB-great area, hot people, nice campus, etc, etc...

Tough choice...

go to IRVINE

there are hot asian girls

i hated uc irvine's campus. ugh. it seemed totally dead.

yea, the one thing I don't like about Irvine is I heard the campus is really dead and boring, but then again SB is a hardcore party school and I'm not really a party guy, I don't know if I can concentrate there with all the partying and peer pressure. And, Davis, I heard it's located in the middle of nowhere and the weather can get really hot there. So, they all cancel out each other.

BTW, does anyone know any site where I can see the acceptance rate to medical school of each UCs?

UCSB is not that bad. It's really what you make of it. I have a 3.64 here and I partied every week. A lot of my friends don't. That's cool here. During midterms and finals the streets are dead. I am also in a pre-med program (Biology major).

As for parties go, if you don't party, there are PLENTY of people that do not as well. Half of my friends do not party, the other half get drunk every night, then there are people like me at the middle (twice to thrice a week for parties).

Hope this helps.

I'm still kinda undecided, It seems like they all about the same in term of premed programs. 2 more questions:

1.) which one of the 3 is the most prestigious? or are they all about the same?

2.) If they all about the same, then which one is the easiest academically? since GPA is the most important factor for med school.

Each of the mid tier UCs are soooo close in prestige, that they are essentially the same.

Pretty much they are the same academically. You will reviece a good education wherever you decide.
