I got accepted to UCI and Chapman but I'm not sure which one i should go for..
i got a $15,000 scholarship for Chapman which is really great and since i'm an international student, I would be paying out of state tuition for UCI..
I'll be majoring in biological sciences since I want to attend medical school after..
i think UCI might be too big.. and even though it has GREAT medical and science facilities, when i have to get recommendations for med school, i think chapman might be better for that..
but i dont know so i need some advice/opinions! :)
which school is better?

I think Chapman would be great for you…better price with the scholarship as well.

However, you need to realize that very few int’l students can get accepted to US med schools. Very few…and you generally need a strong, strong hook.

.I don’t think any Calif SOMs accept int’ls…but maybe USC might accept a couple? US med schools are to educate US students for medicine.

So can you go to med school in your own country?

You may need to rethink coming here for pre-med.

Mom2 is correct. The odds of acceptance to a US med school are extremely low for an international. So if a US med school is your long-term plan, you might rethink it since it ain’t likely to happen.

For just undergraduate college, and being an international, UC prestige is worth the extra money for you. (“Prestige” is huge in in the international arena, and much more so than in the US.)

I was just reading some more about int’l SOM admissions. It seems that the few that do get accepted are the ones who are the super-brilliant ones who are doing the MD/PhD route…which is even more selective.

It looks like the more “run of the mill” high GPA/strong MCAT int’l wouldn’t get accepted.

And the acceptance rate for int’ls to SOMs seems to be about 1% (or maybe less)…and at many SOMs…none at all. A good number won’t accept ANY int’ls.

I saw that one SOM had over 400 int’l applicants and accepted 2.

^^Exactly. The vast majority of US med schools do not accept internationals, period. (They receive a lot of federal dollars for med education, so they give 99% priority to US citizens to serve the US citizenry.)

Well I am a US citizen(i am half american and half japanese)… it’s just that I don’t have residency since I currently live in Japan but I will have residency after living there for a few years though… I’m hoping that will be okay?

Unless your parents MOVE here, you won’t get residency until you’ve graduated from college.

You won’t be considered a resident of Calif while going to school here and your parents live elsewhere.

If you apply to any Calif public med schools, you may have to wait a year after you graduate from Chapman or UCI and work for a year and establish residency.

If you go to UCI for undergrad, you will be OOS the entire time.

BTW…stop calling yourself an int’l student. you’re not. You’re an American living abroad…very different.

oh yea sorry about that… it’s just that i got put in the international pool when i applied to unis
but thank you very much for all the information!

these two schools are not even comparable. if the extra $10,000 tuition is affordable for you (for UCI) you should definitely go that route. It will look a lot better to be applying to med school from UCI than from Chapman.

^^ The two schools are not even comparable? Please be straight with the OP. Chapman is a great school. It ranks 7th in the regional category for the entire West.

Another thing I am concerned about is that the UC schools are having major cut backs… and i hear its really hard to get classes. I also hear that since UCI is competitive and they grade on a curve making it hard to keep a strong GPA… which i need to apply for med school.

However, saying all of this, UCI does have a great reputation for medical school.

I think I am leaning towards Chapman though because of the scholarship and because it is a smaller school.

Chapman is a really good school with lots of investing going on. I would go there. If costs were the same, it might be a “toss up”. But with the Chapman savings, it’s a no-brainer.

nobuko…does your family have a budget? Or will they pay whatever the costs are?

If they save on undergrad, will they help with med school?

well… money isnt too mcuh of a problem i think… but since my brother will be going to university in a few years we want to save as much as possible.
and i think they will help with med school but I will probably try to get financial aid if possible…
so yes! ithink you are right about chapman!

nobuko, You are spot on. Both are great schools. However, I also highly recommend Chapman as well because of better aid and smaller class sizes. You’ll have a better chance of graduating on schedule. These are some of the reasons that my kid is attending Chapman, a private university, instead of a public university. We’re very pleased with Chapman. DS is on track to graduate on schedule. You’ll love it there! I am hearing a lot of great things about their pre-health, and science and tech programs. It’s great that they’re expanding their health sciences. Chapman and Keck Graduate Institute are teaming to open a biopharmacy school. Chapman is building a new 120,000-square-foot Science Center facility in Orange. This is where they will house their health sciences and the Schmid College of Science and Technology. I heard they’re also offering a new Ph.D. program in computational science. Chapman has become a professional research/liberal arts institution. That’s awesome!

oh wow, that’s awesome! i also heard that are going to have a new major from fall…i think it’s kinesiology. It really does seem like the sciences ar chapman are getting stronger each year! :)

FYI…there really isn’t much financial aid for med schools…it’s mostly loans. Med school and law school are usually funded by the student…with loans or family money.
