UCI vs SDSU??

Hi! So I applied to UCI as a pharmacy major and SDSU as a biochem major. Not sure which one to choose. I got accepted into both and I’m not sure. Any pros and cons to tell me? Please help! Thanks!!

Well, I would say it depends on what you’re looking for. Have you visited either? I’d highly recommend it if possible. They have very different vibes and you may instantly feel one is a better fit over the other. Which major do you prefer? I don’t think it’s going to be easy to change your major at either school, so I think that should be your first consideration.

I’m sure you are already aware that UCI is a very well regarded UC, and for good reason, but if you are looking for school spirit, you may be disappointed. It’s in a suburban area, and it has more local commuters than many of the other UCs. I’ve heard some say it empties out on weekends and there isn’t much to do, but I really don’t know. I had a friend who went there and I never heard him complain about it at the time. He enjoyed it and went on to med school from there, but met his wife-to-be at UCI who was a pharmacy major and had no problem finding a job as a pharmacist, so there’s that.

SDSU is one of the best schools in the CSU system in terms of academics. IMO, it’s second only to Cal Poly SLO which is in a league of its own in the CSU system. While most CSUs are considered commuter schools, SDSU is one of the few that isn’t, although it may have more than most UCs. It has much more school spirit than UCI, and more than any other CSU I can think of. And (obviously) it is in San Diego which is a great city. People I know who live in San Diego consider it paradise and never want to leave.

Both great schools, though. Again, think about which major you prefer, and if you have a chance to visit, do. I’m sure the “winner” will become clear. Congrats on your acceptances, and best of luck.

Concur with @1Dreamer’s advice. Both are very different in “vibe”. Definitely plan a visit and see which one appeals to you more. Both are good schools so academically you cannot go wrong.

I actually live in san diego right next to the college ( like 2 blocks away from sdsu ) and its pretty nice. Can’t say I’ve been to UC irvine though…
Staying at SDSU is convenient and cheaper and my friends are here but I’m not sure if I want to give up the academic advantage that a UC has to offer (according to my mom).
Very confused at what I want

You could have said you lived 2 blocks away from SDSU before and saved me some time.

If your parents are pushing for UCI, I assume they are not concerned about the cost for room and board. My personal opinion is that you will not receive a decidedly better education at one over the other, but living away from home will provide an entirely different experience than walking 2 blocks to college in a city you already know well and where many of your friends go.

GO VISIT UCI! I’m a little surprised you haven’t already done that considering you live 90 minutes away. Go today, go tomorrow, go next week, go with your mom, go with a friend, or go by yourself. Just go. I think you will have a much better idea of which you prefer in terms of environment once you do. And again, put some serious thought into which major you prefer because it may be difficult to change majors once you’re in.

Best of luck.

Just one person’s perspective:

Younger son loved SDSU and but did not like UCI at all. Found the campus, too quiet and less social. We live around 1 hour from UCI and 2 hours from SDSU, so he would have been living at both campuses. Found SDSU offered everything he wanted: academically/socially and financially.

A happy student= successful student

My cousin goes to UCI and I attend SDSU. I frequently visit her because it’s her first year and at times she gets lonely and asks me to hang with her. It’s only an hour and 15 minute drive. I’m a 2nd year at SDSU.

I agree with the above posters. I mean in the end, you should attend college just for the environment and how you feel there rather than if one is more academically prestigious. I mean sure, it plays a role but I’m honestly flying through SDSU having fun, doing well in engineering while my cousin is in a way struggling and social life can be absent at times. However, her campus IMO is nicer. Her dorms are just amazing and everything seems new and big. I mean they are more well funded than we are.
