UCI vs. UCD vs. UCSB

Greetings!

This is another thread about deciding on a school.

I was admitted as a Regents Scholar to all three of the above schools, which includes automatic admission into their individual honors program. UCI gives $2,500/year, UCD gives $7,500/year, and UCSB gives $6,000 a year. I was also admitted to UCSD and UCLA, but with no benefits or scholarship money.

Rank-wise and academically, I don't think there are substantial differences between these three schools.

A part of me wants to accept Davis's great scholarship offer, but I live in San Diego, so I'm worried that I won't be able to see my family as often. Davis is one of the safest college campuses in the country, however I'm not a fan of rural places. If I were to choose a school solely on its location, I'd pick UCLA.

Another part of me wants to take UCSB's offer, but I'm not so fond of the party school reputation. The students at UCSB are really nice and laid-back though, so that's a plus.

UCI's location is pretty ideal, an hour and a half away from home. I could come back to San Diego practically any weekend I wanted. $2,500 a year is not much though, considering my parents' income is not high enough to pay for college, but is not low enough to qualify us for good amounts of financial aid.

Thanks in advance for all the input! I know it will help others in my situation too. :)

diana3: Thanks for your post. I have a similar question. Accepted(Biomed engineering) at UCI, UCD, UCSD, Clemson and UW. All are good schools with pros and cons and it’s really tough to make a decision. Still waiting On UCB, Stanford and USC…not real optimistic about these three. Right now I’m leaning toward UCD and UW, but frankly not really sure why. Like diana3 I would appreciate any input that might help me make a good decision. Thanks for any help.

Come on, guys. Over 200 views and no input? We prospective students must help each other out. Any 2 cents will be appreciated, really, anything!

If money is a factor, then just go with Davis? You’ll find nice and laid back students at any university- UCSB is out of the question then, you won’t see much of your family as often whether you’re at sb or davis.

If money isn’t a factor, then go with LA, or SD since its your city.

I think it all depends on how much value the scholarship money, how important the locations of each school, and how important is the “prestige” to you?

Your major also matters.

How about benefits?
I got into: UCLA, UCSD, UCB, UCD, UCI.
So far I crossed out UCLA, UCD and UCI, because I will NOT be able to choose my classes and teachers.
If I don’t get Regents @ UCB, I will NOT planning to go to UCB too.
From UCSD I got Chancellor Scholarship with $5000 a year + priority registration.

seniors, I get priority enrollment at UCSB, UCI, and UCD. There is also guaranteed housing, priority research positions, etc.

Forget UCLA & UCSD because you dont have priority.
“prestige” doesn’t metter.
UCD gaves you 7500, so go there.
Take Southwest to travel to and from college.

I lol’ed irl. It does matter, schools don’t get prestige simply just because they have names or money. Your education* is important, don’t go sub-par.
*aka college career

Imo pick UCD or UCSB because the money difference will add up over the 4 years.

Diff between UCI and UCSB = 3500x4 = 14000
Diff between UCI and UCD = 5000x4 = 20000

If your home is worth more than that… then UCI’s pretty solid. The drive to LA is about 1 hour and the drive to SD is about 2 hours.
