UCI vs. UCD

hi everyone I'm having a little difficult time making a decision between Davis and Irvine. I got accepted today to UCD off the waitlist and Irvine on Friday. I researched both schools and I like them both, but the only difference is the major. Irvine I'm going in as a transfer for Pharmaceutical major and Davis I'm going in as a transfer for Chemistry major. My end goal is to become a pharmacist, is it better to attend UCI because the major is pharmaceutical that when I apply to grad school I will have a better chance? or would it be better to attend UCD with a chemistry major? :/ The reason I want to attend Davis is because it will be away from friends and a new environment, but I'm not sure if I want to go in as a chem major if I can go to UCI as a pharmaceutical giving me a head start on my pharm classes. Please help?

You aren’t going to get extra points because you’re major is pharm sci instead of chemistry (or vice versa). Pharm sci vs. history is a different story…

No matter how well you do at UCI’s pharm program, you’ll have to take every class in pharmacy school.

Thats the best reason to go to Davis.

Note: Looking over the pharm sci program, there are only about 4-5 worthwhile classes the pharm sci program offers. All of your electives are through the school of biology or chem, for example. I don’t think these classes are deal breakers, esp when the alternative is a major in chemistry.

I would consider cost and whether you prefer north cal or south cal.

I dunno chem vs. pharm sci is pretty different. Chemistry you will be taking p-chem, a-chem, and inorganic. Pharm sci courses will be more like bio classes (except med chem). Those are pretty different. I would choose what ever you are better at studying, whether it be chemistry or bio. Grades matter more than what your actual major.

jessicagktai, I had the almost exact situation as you did. I was debating between UCI (pharm sci) or UCLA (chem). I want to go to pharmacy school too. I look over the course curriculum for both majors, and pharm sci courses appeal to me more than straight up chemistry. Both majors look very rigorous though, but I want to be challenged by a subject I’m interested rather than dreading something for the next few years. That was my reasoning that ultimately led me to choose UCI. I also got a chance to talk to the pharm sci advisor, and she was very open minded and explained the opportunities available for incoming transfers.
