So I got into both. But Ive always had my mind set to UCI because I never thought Id get into UCLA. So I dont really know which one to pick. Im oriented towards the medical field so Im down for biological sciences at Irvine and biology at LA.

My sister graduated from UCI with the same major I plan on taking, so she can pretty much tell me what professors, clubs, and research programs to take. But my friends and other family members think I should go to UCLA because of its prestige factor (which Im sure you people are tired of hearing about).

Theyre both great schools and Im grateful to have been accepted to both, but Im not really sure if I should what to do.

What do you guys think?

ucla youll only take 4 quarters of chem/ochem. uci you gotta take 6 quarters, alot of unnecessary crap. you will have a lot more freedom at ucla with your schedule. at uci you will have to take bio 93 94 97 98 99 in sequence, and they are offered only once a year. at ucla you can basically take them in any order and they are offered all the time i believe.

go to ucla, youll end up being happier and having more freedom with your schedule. and normally (i dont know about your family) none of the UC’s are really associated with the word “prestige”, except for Cal, and that’s really because of its age and reputation. academic quality isn’t always associated with prestige, for example, i would bet that UCI and UCLA are both of the same academic quality as some ivies, but neither is considered “prestigious”, at least I personally have never heard someone call UCLA or UCI “prestigious”, that just sounds a bit strange.

I just meant they put it on a higher pedestal than the rest of the UCs.

By the way, I heard chemistry is a big issue at UCLA. Ive been reading the UCLA threads and got a few opinions from friends attending there and they all say it’s hard. Maybe the amount of quarters dont suffice? Do you think Id grasp it better if I had the requisite 6 at irvine?

irvines 6 quarter series goes over wayy more info in the organic part. but the deal breaker would be the amount of freedom you will will have at UCLA with bio classes, you can essentially take them in any order and can plan out your schedule more easily than at UCI. if youre big on chemistry, uci is like #9 nationally if i’m not mistaken. but if you are more into the bio part, go to la, because youll enjoy it more.

thanks for your input. Ill keep that in mind.

If anyone else have something to add Id appreciate it.

idk, I think you should visit ucla, if you haven’t already… it’s a really great school and extremely difficult to get into… i’d be really grateful if I got in and I’d definitely go.

The way the into Bio classes(the 93+ sequence) are set up at UCI is one of the most annoying things about the school. Especially since they do not have associated labs and all Bio labs except one are upper division. =/ On that note however, I love UCI and have enjoyed the Bio and Chem classes.
Definitely visit UCLA, you might decide you don’t really like it, or you might fall in love with it. Your going to spend 4 years there, pick someplace you want to be.

I visited LA as a junior on a field trip. I’m currently at UCI (couldn’t get in LA). I just wanted to say that BOTH campuses have In-n-Out’s so its not really a question of which campus has ‘better’ fast food.

On a serious note. DO NOT let prestige be a deciding factor. Do you have plans after getting a bachelors? Like grad/med school ? If you do than I would opt for UCI since grades are not super ultra competitive as people have told me. (This one girl was at LA for a year before transfering back to UCI her thrid year–she wanted to graduate earlier and UCI had the major she wanted to do). Grades were easier here, but social life wasn’t as great, Also she said that the people in Irvine were ‘better and more down to earth’ she phrased something along those lines.

I currently know 3 people that have turned down LA to come here-- so if you do decide to come here don’t feel bad that you don’t get the “prestige” factor.

PS LA IS prestigious! You mention it to someone and they will know what school your talking about !

About Chem, it may be 6 quarters but Gen. Chem is fairly easy. I made an A- with VERY limited knowledge.

DEFINITIVELY visit the campus, LA’s is nice but it may be cramp at times. Irvine’s campus is also unique in that its circular.

Is there a campus visit day ? You should seriously consider doing both LA and Irvine’s. Also, don’t make the mistake of assuming that the people at UCI are not as motivated or smart as those in LA. There are some very smart people here and you can learn and grow a lot by being around them.

Congrats ! Make the right choice !

UCLA doesn’t have the same prestige as lets say some ivie. Whenever I mention UCLA around adults the first thing that comes to mind is their basketball team, and sometimes the rivalry between USC.

Thanks for the details guys I really appreciate it. There are visit days and I plan to attend both of them.
