So I got into these three schools (+Davis but that’s out of my list rn), but I am not sure where I should go. I am straying further away from Rochester because of its price, and I am majoring in biology for all three as a pre-med student.
UCI Pros: familiar with the area (used to live in Irvine)
warm, close to the beach
good education
name value (sorta) Cons: expensive (66k/year), no financial aid or scholarships (+out of state student)
lots of students, which makes opportunities for pre-med students harder to get
sort of an old school
grade deflation
URochester Pros: small school, less students
provides more opportunities
pretty
seems like I would like it there Cons: super expensive (80k/year), no financial aid or scholarships
cold
Kansas University Pros: Honors, got scholarship
Cheaper than the rest (27k/year)
Close to home Cons: Was a last resort school until I saw the prices of the other schools, honestly not that passionate
Not full ride, still have to pay somewhat
Classes aren’t as big as UCI, but aren’t that small
Ty for the help! I’ve been thinking about it a lot, since it would be nice to go to a pretty high ranked school, but at the same time I don’t really want to graduate with debt :((
I went to Kansas 30+ years ago and was in the honors program.
Great school with good spirit, particularly with basketball. For pre-med, what matters most is GPA and MCAT. Save the money now as you will need it later.
Yes, that’s why I was super worried about going to UCI, because GPA is important but it would be much harder to maintain a good GPA there. Thank you for the response!
You are majoring in bio and few who decide to go to med school make it. Bio is a low paying major.
So KU is your clear choice.
It won’t help you now but if you have a sibling, make it a point for next time to learn which schools offer / give merit and which don’t. There’s a ton that do.
btw - you can still, depending on your GPA, apply to U of Arizona - need to get in by May 3rd (it’s like a two week app) - if you have a 4.0 in HS (unweighted), you get $35K off of $37K tuition. A 3.9 is $30K off. A 3.75 is $20K off. You have Pac 10 sports and it’s a solid school.
There may be others - such as Alabama Bham or Huntsville as well you can get into that are reasonable.
Good luck - but in your case, KU is a no brainer. But U of Az can be your - I want out of here - the savior for that!!! It’s an easy app too - or common app.
Unless your family can easily afford the other two, stick with cheaper - esp if interested in med school. If cost isn’t a problem at all (no debt, no sacrificing retirement, etc) go where you like the best.
There will be a list coming out the first week in May with schools that still are accepting apps. You can look over that list to see if anything appeals, but you might not get less expensive than KU.
ps If cost is a factor, you didn’t get anything from UR? They tend to provide relatively decent need-based aid to many (not all).
