UCI - Will aid be disbursed in time to pay Fall Fees

Hello,

This is my second year at UCI and because I wanted more control over my money I did not authorize UCI to pay my registration fees for me. I was just wondering if UCI aid will be disbursed in time for me to use them to pay for Fall fees.

If anyone is wondering what I mean when I told UCI not to pay my fees for me can refer to this link. Please not that the option selected in the picture is not the option I choose.

If I am mistaken in how this process works please correct me.

Thanks.

Why would you not have the funds go directly to your account with the balance given to you after your costs were covered? Just curious.

I think it’s a mistake to have made the selection for you.

Funds aren’t going to be distributed to YOU until your bills at UCI are paid.

I don’t understand this, “I wanted more control over my money.”

The way it works is this…aid is given to the school, after bills are paid, then any LEFTOVER funds are given to the student…but that’s usually 2-3 weeks after classes start…so not in time to pay for college.

The funds really aren’t “yours” in the sense that they are being given to you to pay for COLLEGE. UCI isn’t going to be sending you any checks while you owe THEM money.

Think about it. If for fall quarter you owe UCI $7,000 for tuition and maybe $7k for room and board, and you’re being given $14k in various FA, the school is NOT going to give you that $14k when you haven’t paid for tuition, etc, yet. They can’t risk that you’d blow that $14k and never pay for your school costs.

In general, even if funds are disbursed late, if the school is paying, the late fees are waived. If you have outside funds coming in, and financial aid is slow to process then you won’t be fighting late fees.

It’s not your money to control, unless it is loans and even then it is only being loaned to you for school, have the fees paid by the school.

^^that assumption feels to me (the waiving of the late fees) when the school knows the money is coming into the account directly. The OP should probably call finaid and find out how it’s going to work for the OP. I’m still wondering why the OP would have made the decision that was made. Typically for my kids their federal direct loans have hit their accounts during the week before the final bill was due. Only once was there an overage and it was under $100. My son received a check a couple weeks after the term began. I’m not sure what the OP means by control…unless the OP was figuring the check would come in and the OP would get money back right away when going to settle out the bill. I’m guessing only the burser’s office or financial aid can probably “tell” the OP how this is going to work but it would be good to find out. I know at both my kids’ college if the bill isn’t paid on time they are dis-enrolled from their classes or at least that is the threat implied by those two colleges.

And that’s not what’s happening, either. If you follow the link that the OP provided, you’ll see that the OP’s election has nothing to do with tuition payments. The charges at issue are such things as “library charges, tutorial assistance, student health charges, late charges, etc.” - in other words, various miscellaneous charges that the OP may or may not incur sometime AFTER school starts.

And perhaps the OP misunderstood this also. The OP’s registration fees will be taken directly out of his/her financial aid funds. Once those mandatory fees have been paid IN FULL, then, and only then, any remaining balance will be released to the OP. It will then be the OP’s responsibility to monitor any additional charges he or she incurs. If such additional charges are not paid promptly, then he or she will incur late fees, as well.

That’s good.

Basically due to circumstances I do not want to discuss, I was unable to go to summer school and therefore I did not receive aid to pay for housing over the summer. The amount for housing for the summer is now sitting on my dad’s credit card. The first option from the picture, the option I chose last time, would split the aid into three equal parts for each school quarter; for each quarter they will use the money to pay for their fees first and give me any money leftover. If I choose this method again I will have enough to pay for fees and remove the debt from my dad’s credit card but only have enough money left over for one month of housing during the school and I will be forced to use my dad’s credit card ,again, as a holding place. I just want to know what happens when I choose the second option. I will contact the office once I can but as it was the weekend I could not do so with their office closed. I was just looking for a simple answer from this forum but I can’t seem to get a clear answer. So will a UCI student who has chosen this option before tell me what happens when I chose this option.

Now that it’s Monday morning, and since we were apparently not able to give you the information you needed, it would be helpful for future ICI students who have the same question if you would take a moment, after you receive a response from UCI, to come back here and tell us what they said. Thank you!

Do you live on or off campus?

If you live on campus, then the school is not likely going to refund cash to you this quarter that is supposd to go towards your campus housing.

If you live off-campus, then maybe this plan will work.

Since this could happen next summer, if you can’t take any classes again, the at least work as much as you can to pay your rent (assuming that health issues or similar don’t interfere.)

Since school doesn’t start til around the 3rd week of Sept, I don’t see you getting funds until early October (if you live off campus).

Can you work NOW and try to get some money to pay for the debt?
