I chose to major in Business Econ at UCI. As a transfer student, I've finished all the pre-reqs except for MATH 4 (Math for Economists).

Is it a good major? What can I do with it? I know it's just an econ degree with a few management classes.
I also read on an old thread that because the major is part of the School of Social Sciences and not Merage, it'll be hard to find a job. Is this true? Do companies even recruit Business Econ majors right after college?

Career-wise, I actually want to go into Accounting. I thought I could MINOR in Accounting, in addition to majoring in Business Econ. BUT, I know that UCI's Accounting minor is very limited.

I don't really know what to do. I feel like I've made the wrong choice, but I had no other option because their Business Admin major is really small, and I REALLY want to go to UCI.

If you major in ECON and minor in management you’re pretty much taking the same classes. My friend went that route. She says its 7 classes less to graduate too than business Econ.

Econ vs. Business Econ doesn’t matter to employers or grad schools.
If I had it to do over again I’d have done regular Econ and then taken on a second major in something like computer science and a minor in English or Literature.

Where you go>Work/Leadership Experience>GPA>Major

if anything employers care about people being well rounded. Taking a few more classes for an extra word on your resume isn’t worth it in the short run or the long run especially if it lowers your GPA.

Once you’re in it’s relatively easy to change your minor and switching from Econ to Business Econ is rather easy, the courses overlap a lot.

It says here that I’ve finished all the pre-reqs, except for MGMT 7 (Statistics) and MGMT 30B (Managerial Accounting).

I can gladly take the courses and apply for change of major, but Business Admin is LIMITED, and it says it CANT GUARANTEE A SPOT. I don’t want to waste valuable time.

I feel like crawling into a hole. What do I do?

I feel like I should just switch to regular Econ. It’s got 3 fewer courses than Business Econ.
Then I’ll minor in Accounting.

So, this summer, I’ll take MATH 4, and then in the fall, I’ll take MGMT 30B, and two other Econ courses, and apply for the Accounting minor and the change of major.

Does that sound okay? I don’t really know when those applications will be processed, so I’ll talk to the counselor this summer if I get in.

Business Econ is a great major if you can accompany it with accounting and work experience. A lot of firms are located in Irvine and I’m sure plenty of opportunities arise for Business Econ majors. If i could rank it recruiting wise it would be Biz Admin>Biz Econ> Econ. Add an accounting minor (IF you can get in) onto any major and be on course for CPA and you will get a job in accounting. I get a sense that you really don’t know what economics and business economics majors go into though so maybe you should do some research and try to find exactly what your trying to get into. All I can say is that all firms in finance, accounting, and consulting all recruit from biz econ/ econ/ and biz admin.
