UCI's reputation

hey CC'ers at UCI..
is it true that UCI is completely dead on the weekends?? I've heard the rumor of it being a commuter school, which really sucks because i plan not to buy a car next year, so I'll dorm and wont come home as often.. kind of strange for a school smack dab in the OC

shed some light please..
anymore pros/cons about UCI would be great too..
is it true that they have a really good english program?
what about polysci?

Here's the biggest stereotype:
UCI=University of Chinese Immigrants.

^yes, i've heard that too. lol
well, not those exact words, but i know its dominated by a 50+% asian population, which is A LOT... not good

-----------------------------------CON------------------------------
(i'm making a pro's and con's list..)

From Wikipedia. Freshman enrolling in 2008:

Asian/Asian American 55.3%
Caucasian/White 21.7%
Mexican American 11.5%
Spanish American 3.6%
No response or Unknown 3.5%
African American 2.0%
Other 2.2%
American Indian <1%

Well i just went there this Saturday, and it was pretty nice. I mean i guess the shopping is a little far but if you're willing to go for a 30 minute walk i guess its not bad

But hey that's why you make friends who have cars right?

overall I thought it was a very safe environment O:

Even though UCI is known for having a large Asian population (about 52% of the student body), it's not that much higher than at a lot of UC's.

For example, about 48% of UCSD's student body is Asian. I believe it's about 45% at Berkeley.

Also, the UC regents recently made changes to admission requirements (set to go into effect in a few years) which are predicted to dramatically increase the proportion of other races at each UC.

i know! im hoping its not socially dead either!
im from norcal so there is no way i can come home every weekend.
as a freshman are you allowed to have your car at uci?

lets hope some other people have positive things to say about social life on weekdays/ends. lol

and yes they have a really strong humanities/english program haha

is there a site or something where i can check on the ratings on programs/departments at each UC?

and yes DjxRAve, i hope it's not just like.. us left on the weekends.. lol
that would be so horrible :(

^^

im not totally sure. but my best friend's cousin goes there and shes taking humanities as her major and says its really strong and one of the best.

OMG! i really hope not either haha! :(
we should go search campus for all those people who stay there and all have weekend activities!
have you thought about which dorm you'll be staying in?

^ I have friends at UCI who stay over the weekends, mostly upper clansman since they live off campus in the apartments.

Most Freshman/soph I know go home on the weekends... I know, lame....

I for one would not do that, I want to get out of anywhere near my home

lol im thinkin of goin there but i heard it's pretty boring...any of u guys that go there think that?

also, i went there last night to check it out w/ my dad and the place was dead lmao...it was like super dark n **** XD we just drove around and ended up in campus village near the physical sciences building or something O.o is it always that quiet there? lol not tryin to hate or anything just wondering before i go heh

@haiku : yeah mainly upperclassmen stay? that is lame. =[
maaannn i wish more fresh/sophomore stayed. this sucks haha.
looks like ill end up knowing most of those who stay lol

@khiz15 : yeah im scared of being bored, but im outgoing so if i see someone ill just go up and talk to them haha.

and its spring break for them so maybe thats why its so quiet. people may have went places and such. i dunno haha

@djxrave, i have no idea! im going on the 15th for the tour..
what about you, decided? let me know what you choose!
i hear it's between mesa court, middle earth, and arroyo vista for freshmen right?

oh and here.. check this out guys..
University of California at Irvine (UC Irvine) - Review of Admission, Undergraduate Program, and Student Life

@ DJ rave and breakfast club

Yeah, I know one time I visited my freshman friend on Saturday, her dorm was COMPLETELY EMPTy, there was ONE DUDE... that is IT

lol

I'll be that one dude left.

You'll be seeing me on the weekends, probably riding my bike or using the facilities while no one else is!

@breakfastclub : really? i would go then but I live so far away i would have to miss alot of school to go on a wed. =[
so im visiting this upcoming weekend and taking the tour on the 30th.
I'm also visiting again the 18th of april.
yeah arroyo vista is greek life i hear though. so its really MC and ME.
from what i hear MC is more sociable than ME. but ill see when i visit.
im leaning towards MC though.

thanks for that link. says that UCI is socially dead.... FANTASTIC! lol.
but I dont wanna go to davis.. I wanna get away from norcal. haha

^^ wow thats kinda crazy! O___O
.... im not looking forward to that AT ALL.
i hope my dorm will have SOME people there. :(

^lmao haiku. hahah i could see it now...

anyhow, at least we've got 3 people for our weekend club. haha :)

@ djxrave: dude, i want to go on the 15th because they let you do everything at once.
there's 4 sessions, and it lasts throughout the entire day, so you'll get the bang for your buck for coming down and getting the complete package on one day.. you know?

i rsvped for:
Session 1: Campus Events Blitz #1 (find out about greek life, clubs, etc)
Session 2: Campus Tour
Session 3: Academic Unit Session (learn about my major)
Session 4: Housing Tour

so yeah, im knocking out everything that day. i think it's worth missing school :P

I currently live in the dorms. It's not nearly as dead as people are making it out to be.
Sure people go home on the weekends, but you have to remember that half the students at UCI are from nor cal, and they're not going anywhere. Also, even many of the students who live close by choose to stay, as I do (I live only 25 minutes away.)

I'd say that around 20-30% of my hall goes home on the weekend, maybe even less. Anyway, it's definitely not "dead."

^ hahah yeah we got 3 people for sure. :)
but oohhh i know they really do have everything planned out.
you're right haha... then that sat has the 18th which is open house.
Hmmmm.... i guess a week of missing school would be ok. :P
I'll talk it over with my parents.
I'm just too eager to visit the campus plus waiting another 2 weeks man. HAHA.
