Any UK friend help me?
I am going to study in UK this september(MSc)
which U. is the best?
UCL ,U. of bristol or U. of york?
My major is computer science

any help is much appreciated
thanks in advance

UCL is the best of the 3, plus it is in london :)

I will go with UCL as well.

On UCAS you can put a firm and and an insurance choice. So without a doubt put UCL as your firm choice (but you might want to think about other factors aside from academics, ie. atmosphere, cost, etc), and for your insurance either Bristol or York will be just about as good.

It really depends what you want, beyond the rankings. UCL is obviously in London, which would be a plus if you like the big city atmosphere, but living in London would be twice as expensive as living in York. It's a very expensive city.

York is a much smaller city, but with a lot of history (I live near York, and people always say that anything from the Tudor period in York is modern) and great shopping.

I don't know much about Bristol, except that it's nearer London if you wanted to visit it but not live there, and people say that buildings in the university 'are like Hogwarts'. :P

I don't know much about the rankings for science, but York and Bristol are definitely considered top universities for arts subjects, so perhaps science is similar? I'm not sure. But the three universities are in very different environments, so maybe looking into which would suit you more would help.

UCL is a great university but it's in London which is really expensive. Bristol is also a great uni (top 10) and it's not as expensive. It's also reputed to have a great social scene. I would put down Bristol as my firm option.

On reputation it would be UCL slightly better than Bristol, which is slightly better than York. But UCL will be considerably more expensive than Bristol even though it reputation is only slightly better than Bristol's.

Anyway, all three are good so you should probably just pick the one you like best. Your opportunities after university will be the same regardless of which one you go to. Being in London will give you more exposure to jobs, but it will also be more difficult to get those jobs because competition for graduate jobs in London is incredibly fierce.

Lately on the ranking of CS,york ranked just after cambridge and imperial, and bristol is slightly better than UCL.
Maybe for MSc, the ranking of CS department is not than important compared with the overall reputation.
So UCL is a good choice.
expensive....................

Apperantly York's computer science major is even better ranked than in Cambridge University. However it was ten years ago when my sister studied there! So maybe York isnt bad for that, I would say UCL is good too!

UCL in my opinion

yup, ucl. Good reputation.

Depends what you like/ want. The reputation of Bristol and UCL is pretty similar in the UK - maybe not internationally due to the London factor. Bristol is a smaller city and because the university takes up a sizable portion of the city it has quite a studenty feel and vibe. The social life is also supposed to be one of the best in the UK - NME (a popular UK music magazine) called it the best student city in the UK.

In London though you're not exactly going to be struggling to find things to do - however, its massive and isn't studenty. Also, depending on how much you're willing to pay for rent after your first year, you may have to live quite far out.

UCL.. totally beats the rest!

it seem that no suggestion about york yet

I don't have any idea about the relative merits of the programs at the different uni's but i was an undergrad at Bristol backin the dark ages and loved it!
If there's not much to choose between the different programs think about the environment you'd like to be in. Bristol is an old port - actually it's a much bigger city than York I think - and the gateway to the Southwest of England and close to Wales. York, culturally different, old walled city, Roman and Viking remains etc, lots of charm and closer to the Lake district, north Yorkshire moors etc. London's easier (faster) to get to from Bristol but if you're up for living in the metropolis London has it all! Good luck making the decision.

UCL has the best reputation of the three, but is only very marginally better within the UK if thats where you would settle.

UCL and Bristol are both seen as comfortably in the top 10 UK universities by most people. York is generally seen as borderline top 10.

Although, for computer science York is meant to be the best department out of the three. However, the top employers generally care about the university as a whole rather than the best departments.

Yeah. In general the Uni rep seems to be more important than the department.

The Top 10 are ussualy: Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL, King's College London, Edinburgh (the last 2 spots are ussualy filed by: St. Andrews, Bristol, Nothingham, SOAS, York and Warwick).

Kings isn't usually inthe top 10. Durham, Bath, Warwick would be up there as well.

I'm not big on rankings, but check out this link:

All of the programs that you've listed appear to be well respected. Perhaps you should consider some other factors like environment, quality of life, etc. Also, since all top progams are likely to offer a solid education, it might also be important to consider relative international prestige. If you are going to stay in the UK, then any of the top ten schools will suffice. If you plan to work in the US, then Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and St Andrews carry the most prestige.
