I have offers from UCL, UC Davis, Kings College, Warwick University or NYU for Computer Science. Which one do you think is the best and why?
Net price at each? Your budget?
Budget is not really an issue.
Do you live in the US or in the UK? And why the other country to get a degree?
Have you looked at the degree structure, the classes offered, the style of teaching? Any preference?
I live in thailand. In terms of degree structure the only main difference is UK is 3 years while US is 4 years. Cant seem to find anything about the teaching style in the US, in the UK it is mainly lecture based. I have some preference to the states due to its opportunities in tech industry. But i am unsure which uni is the best interms of computer science.
You’ll get a good CS education at any of these, and in CS, what skills you develop and what you can demonstrate in terms of coding will matter much more than where your degree is from. But considering you’re international and may work internationally I would pick either UCL or NYU because of their greater global recognition and being in either London or NYC.
The reason why UK is only 3 years is because they skip the first year of general requisites that most US univ programs have (covered by the A levels instead). So if you want to be more focused just on CS, and graduate sooner, go to UCL.
If you want the opportunity to take more elective courses on topics not related to your major, go to NYU. US college curriculums are generally much broader than UK/European ones.
@newjerseygirl98 is absolutely correct since budget plays a major role in attending.
In the UK, you’ll have about 8-10 hours of class and everything else will be big projects to do on your own. TYpically you’ll have 3 classes each semester, 6 classes per year, total of 18 different classes. All your 1st year classes will be mandatory and about half of your remaining classes. Evaluations take place twice a year -you may well have only 2 grades per subject, 40% of the grade is your midterm, 60% of the grade is your final).
In the US, you’ll have about 5 classes per semester and 15-16 hours of class per week, with lectures, labs, discussion sections in small groups (typically 25 people), a variety of approaches, with 10 classes per year and 40 classes over 4 years, including 12-15 in CS, 12-15 in general education (classes that ensure that you’re well-educated in a variety of fields and approaches), and the rest will be entirely up to you ( Therefore, you’ll have maximum flexibility in selecting classes and adding a minor, for instance.) Evaluations include midterms, finals (you’d have a minimum of 3 grades per semester), sometimes quizzes, speeches, papers, participation (depending on the class and its format).
@MYOS1634 @insanedreamer Thanks for the input.
UCL will get you to same degree at 1/3rd the cost of NYUand at 1 year less
I would highly recommend going to UCL. But then the thing is that, the US obviously has more job openings and opportunities than the UK. And that, i will let you decide upon.
