UCLA 2017 Freshman Appeals

@someguy18 Major doesn’t matter for L&S. Most of the time UCLA will view a nursing change to L&S appeal as just a backup to not getting into nursing. You can try appealing but I doubt it will work. There were many very qualified L&S kids that were flat out denied as well

@10s4life I was one of those who got rejected from Nursing and do those appeals usually work? I do want to appeal for L&S because of the realization that Nursing is not for me.

@potus2044 Once you got in through appeal, how did the financial aid and everything work out? Does Regents Scholarship get considered, etc?

@Trish19 Unfortunately they usually don’t. Appeals are mainly for missing relevant information or mistakes. Not a change of heart on the applicants end.

@10s4life I see, but I’m glad to know that it is still possible, no matter how small the chance is. I was wondering about what happens after a successful appeal. Do you get considered for things such as Regents Scholarship or the Blue and Gold opportunity plan, etc.?

@Trish19 regents, no. If you were a regents candidate you would be part of the top 1-2% which means you would’ve been admitted already. You would get the corresponding need Based aid. No merit.

@10s4life so i have a couple questions. So i got rejected for computer science in HSSEAS so im thinking about appealling to be reconsidered for Linguistics and Computer Science in L&S, so is that a bad choice? The thing I is that the change of major isnt my whole appeal, I have a genuine reason for the change of major and there is some information related to my work with comp sci that i had not listed in the original application. My second question is that do i have a higher chance of getting in with an appeal by appealing for comp sci again, or changing my major? @potus2044

@10s4life Is the top 1-2% based on only GPA or how is it considered? And I can see why it would be impossible for a student who was accepted through appeal to get Regents, but maybe if they were rejected through Nursing or Theatre, etc. but were actually a top student, I was thinking there could be a possiblity somehow.

@Trish19 It’s for all students. So if you were top 1-2% you would’ve been in nursing. Regents is seperate from all the individual colleges it’s campus wide.

@someguy18 I’m sorry but I’m not seeing really any grounds for an appeal. Obviously if you want you should try but I would look towards another school. UCLA has gotten so competitive so don’t think of this as a loss. Appeals are very rarely granted. All applications are read and reviewed thoroughly.

@10s4life okay thank you so much! Sorry just one last question, which do you think I have a higher chance in, appealing again into comp sci or appealing into Ling and Cas?

@someguy18 What are your stats again?

@10s4life

Developed 4 Apps, and I have been working for a. Tech company for the last two years

Volunteering 400 hours at the end of 12th grade

Selected for the USA national cricket team

What i didnt write in the appeal was that i was selected by Apple to attend a developers conference, as well as the other types of volunteering i have done. I also plan write about some circumstances in my family. Thank you so much for your help!!!

@someguy18 CS in HSSEAS is almost certinaly a no. Appealing to L&S is also almost certainly a no. A 1380 isn’t high enough. I’m sorry. If you like still appeal but be prepared. That’s my honest assessment.

@10s4life Could you review my stats by any chance?

@10s4life thank you so much for your opinion! I genuinely appreciate the honesty!

@Trish19 sure but again I think there’s not much ground for an appeal. Admissions isn’t going to change their minds unless mistakes were made or real relevant info is missing.

@someguy18 I really have no idea what goes through admissions’ minds when they read appeals ¯_(ツ)_/¯ so I don’t know what’s more/less likely, I can only speak from my own experience. I would say an appeal is worth it because worst outcome is just a no again, don’t get your hopes up, but just write the best letter you can. I have no idea if you have a better chance appealing for engineering or l&s. Just do the appeal for the thing you are most interested in. Wouldn’t recommend sacrificing a true passion for ucla

@Trish19 to the best of my knowledge, oos don’t qualify for CA state aid, so I don’t have that; regents already decided, don’t have that; don’t qualify for federal, so no idea how that process works. Also when writing your appeal, you can include your dec-jan info if you want, but admissions will not likely weight it too heavily, if at all, since it’s not info missing from the original application, due in November. You may be able to use it to make a case for your passion in something other than nursing tho ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I’m part of the 97k of students who didn’t make the cut. So I’m wondering: What arguments or things could I state in my appeal?
