I just got into UCLA and I'm set on attending. I've bought a T-shirt online already to show my commitment blah blah blah. Anyway, I was curious, do a lot of people at UCLA ride bicycles? I live near UC Davis and I know it is a biking town. I just don't know too much about UCLA. Anyone care to explain?

No, not really. There are some people who commute by bike if they live a few miles away, and then they walk around when they get to campus, and some bikers who go off campus and ride in the back country on the weekends. But as for getting around campus on a bike, it’s almost impossible, because UCLA (and the surrounding area) is very hilly with stairs everywhere. For example, to go from the dorms to class, you have to go down from one very steep hill down to the bottom, and then go up another hill. And there are almost no direct wheel-accessible paths to go up the latter hill without taking an elevator in a building somewhere (there is a crazy zigzag path, but it is impractical and nobody uses it), or taking a long detour on a street. Plus Bruin Walk (the main walkway from dorms to classes) is a dismount zone, so you can’t ride on it.

The UCLA campus is hilly and so are the surrounding areas. Most of the time you need to get off and walk your bike on the steep slopes (and there are lots of them). Campus is very compact (the smallest UC in terms of acreage) and you can get from one side of campus to another in about 15 minutes. There are also free shuttles that go around the popular spots on campus, so you don’t have to worry about transportation.
