UCLA Academics??

Can anyone comment on how rigorous the courses are (particularly most GE's)? The reported averages and the crazy students are already scaring me...I dunno I guess I feel like the dumbest of the smart =-( (my SATs and GPA aren't the highest...and I'm the biggest procrastinator)

Hey, you won't be alone. Most of the smart kids I know are procrastinators, and those that aren't, I am working on. :)

thx for the reassurance! I just have no confidence all of a sudden. I mean I've always been at the top of the class, but it scares me that EVERYONE is gonna be that kid from the top of the class...uuuhhhgggg I'll just have to humble myself and forget about others and do MY best =-) Are you a ucla student or an admit?

Admit. I'm not the top of my class, but I'm up there. That's mainly because my school is full of slackers, and the more people you have(nearly 1000), the more people you have who don't care. Senioritis has busted my questioned confidence, so it's back now. Just remember: You have to work REALLY hard to be the bottom of the class, and dang it, in college you just don't work that hard. (Well, ok, maybe you do. But that's not the stereotypical college student, and what do I know of being in college?)

my grade is really little. we have about 200 kids. we're also crazy competitive tho. 4.0 gpa starts at number 23. we're basically all crazy AP nuts. I guess you do need to try pretty hard to fail...but at the same time...getting a C or even a B is gonna hit the ego hard. I'll deal tho. I mean 3 or 4 classes is not the crazy 6 class juggle in high school. that will prolly help =-) Where are you from?

I got my first C in AP Physics, so I simply described it on my applications as exploring new options and discovering it wasn't my strong suit. Our crazy competetive kids start at, oh let's say #4. Our fifth kid is a genius, but lazy, and after that, the rest of us just kind of...do our thing(I'm talking about the top thirtyish). It's kind of amazing how laid back we are about this stuff, but, that may be due to the peer pressure from the 700 kids that don't care as much.

very true...well I'm stoked that I'm not going to be a loser procrastinator! Everyone will be a procratinator!! haha is ookla your first choice or are you still waiting for other schools? what's your major?

I'm waiting for UVa and UCSD, but Uva is top choice. I want to major in gov at UVa, but history/polisci if I end up at UCLA. You?

haha sorry to interrupt the convo between you too.

GE's vary but most of the aren't hard. i would say that the majority of GE's are easier than APs, and given that you'll be only taking 3-4 classes, you should be okay. The easier GE's are the ones that AREN'T curved actually; those are the ones where you can earn a good grade without much extra help.

yes the average gpa at ucla is 3.1 which is kinda scary considering half the student population has under that!!!

life science majors are very competitive, as it is at every good school. these classes are graded on a curve. engineering is flat out difficult, as it is at every good school as well.

you do have your gpa-grubbers. you have people who work hard. you have people who put in partial effort. you have slackers/procrastinators. you have people who just dont care and rather have fun. and then you have those who party all night but still ace the exam the next morning. lol. there's a wide spectrum of effort that students put into their academics at ucla; its not cutthroat competitive like it is at the ivies.

procrastination in college will kill you, especially on the quarter system. being 1 or 2 days behind is bad enough and being a week behind is a huge hole. quarter system is fast and brutal. if you want your A's, gotta keep up. otherwise, i think the effort you put in correlates with your gpa.

procrastination doesn't mean little effort. it's just a bunch of effort squeezed into a time crunch, my best work environment. But, I see your point. Getting mono and falling behind for a month and a half in three AP classes was hard enough, I don't intend on doing that on purpose in a college environment.

I'm on here a lot tonight because I'm bored and, coincidentally, putting off homework(but it's not due til friday).

so much good advice from everyone! Thank you kfc4u! I feel like I've thanked you a gajillion times! You're officially my ucla dictionary. I'm waiting for SD...a few days ago I was actually pretty devoted to UCSD. But now it's about 70% LA 30% SD. I'll prolly go psych, although trying to get into the pysch program might be a whole new adventure. currently I'm "undeclared-life science". we'll see what happens =-)

Yep, I'm undeclared as well. Psychology...ew. My experience with the subject has been ruined by the AP class.

a month and a half in college quarter system is 6 out of 10 weeks. by then, midterms would've already rolled around.

i also think in high school, it was much easier to procrastinate and still turn in something good. i just think its a lot tougher to do that in college.

yes, you are probably right. sigh...

kissyourLbow, looks like you're interested in a life science type of psychology, which is what ucla has. the ucla psych major is a lot more life science focused than it is social science focused. there are also related majors such as cognitive science and psychobiology.

you can check out the psych dept at www.psych.ucla.edu

I was wonderin about psychobio actually...ucla is the only uc I found with that major..what's your major kfc4u? looks like I have to shape up on my procrastinating...I'm pretty bad a.k.a. right now I have AP calc and AP phsyics hw and I'm typing and watching American Idol =-/

Yeah I think senior year has helped me pull my crap together more than my last 3 years, which is nice because it only makes sense to make progress every year right? =) the only class that I'm behind in is Biology AP, in which theres a ton of reading and doing study guides and words lol.

oh btw I'm taking 6 Aps right now.

Pyschobio relates closely with neurosciences I think; Alzheimer's is a big thing under pyschobio (I had a friend at USC who majored as a psychobio before switching to neurosciences).
