Ucla is my dream school, and I was curious to know if the type of major of interest you declare on your college app helps or hurts your admission chance. I want to go for pre-med, prob bio major, but I know that major is extremely competitive. If I put english major or art on my college app will it help me get in (ill change majors once im in?)

Colleges know that students are likely to change majors once they get to college, whether for reasons similar to yours or just due to a change of interest. Both of the majors you mentioned are in the College of Letters and Science, and declaring a less popular major such as English as opposed to a pre-med science major wont increase your chances of getting in.

Your major does make a difference at the UCs and CSU in that some are impacted. You also may not be able to change into an impacted major. As of 2010 English was one of those. Look through some of the data in this google search. <a href=“u california impacted majors - Google Search”>u california impacted majors - Google Search; Hopefully UCBAlumnus will post to provide more info.

When applying to UCLA for any major in the College of Letters and Science the major you list on your application is NOT taken into account when they decide whether or not to admit you. I suggest you take a look at the admission webpage which goes over all the selection criteria.

Post #3 does not apply to you. Impacted Majors are only a concern for those applying as transfer students. As an entering frosh you will be able to easily switch to a major within L&S once you meet the requirements. Again, spend some time reading the UCLA website for further info.

Looks like UCLA frosh applying to Letters and Science can apply to some majors, pre-majors, or undeclared (note the footnotes):

The English department web site does not have any information indicating that it is particularly impacted or that a high GPA or competitive admission process is needed to declare the major:

You can major in English and take the pre-med courses alongside.
